New Soldier vs Farmer vs OHT

Ok, I've got a choice between these. I can get only one. Who recommends what and why?
All of them are fine knives, but what are you looking for?

For a EDC, I would probably go with the Farmer for it's smaller size and slimmer profile. For a camping folder that I would carry in a pack or belt sheath, I would probably go with the OHT if I could find one with the plain (non-serrated) blade. Otherwise its a toss up between the OHT and the New Soldier as they are almost the same except for cosmetics.

I'm looking to complete a Nessmuk Trio (already have a mora clipper and buck camp axe), so it needs to be camping-oriented. I don't need the tweezers and toothpick, since I have a classic tucked in a first-aid kit I carry when camping. I like taking the absolute minimal amount of gear I can get away with, but I'm wondering how much functionality I'm giving up by going with the farmer over the OHT/New Army (between those two, I'll go with whatever I can get cheaper, as they are basically the same). I really like the style and form of the farmer, I just don't want to lose any essential functions.

As part of that Nessmuk trio I'd pick the Farmer as you already have the Mora to cover bigger jobs, so the Farmers smaller blade may be an advantage in some situations. Also the one big advantage the Farmer has is the excellent awl. I'm also not a huge fan of serrated blades in general.

Go for the Farmer, Nessmuk would have. :)

All three of them are very good knives. But, I prefer the Farmer.

My reasons for this:
- the Farmer is smaller than the other two and is therefore more suitable for EDC,
- I prefer the way the awl is implemented on the Farmer,
- I like the looks of the Farmer more than then the looks of the other two.

Advantages of the OHT and New Soldier could be: they have bigger tools, more tools and the blade and bottle opener are locking.

Edit: saw you posted a response while I was typing. Now I would certainly recommend the Farmer. The only functionality you give up by choosing the Farmer is not having a philips screwdriver. My camping set up consists of a Mora and a Farmer or Huntsman. I've not been into axes yet.

Great, thanks for the replies, guys. Just ordered the Farmer. I know it's well-loved here and on every knife site I could find, plus I like the traditional looks better than the OHT/New Soldier. I have the now-discontinued old Soldier, but it's a safe queen for collectability (is that a word?) reasons.

Yeah, sounds like the Farmer is what you want. The main advantages of the OHT/New Soldier is one hand opening, locking and slightly larger blade. Since you've got the Mora, the Farmer should round out your trio just fine.

I agree with your getting the Farmer. I just picked up a red and a blue. You're only giving up a slightly longer saw on the OHT, which I have stopped carrying. I also like the Farmer's awl, AND the small screwdriver on the can opener will work on Philips screws.

Good choice , Farmer is as good as it gets for EDC or woods walking !

"you give up by choosing the Farmer is not having a philips screwdriver" Don't forget the bottle opener can be used as a philips screwdriver. FarmerLover.

Farmer. I have the older Bundeswehr OHT and it is too big for the trio. I'd prefer the Farmer.

I agree 100%. It is my EDC and woods bummin' pocket knife of choice. Has been for years and still looks practically brand new. I can't see changing any time soon because it is absolutely perfect for what I need. OHT's are great but IMO my Farmer takes the prize any day of the week. As others have said, it is easier to pocket carry w/o giving up much. This advantage assures that it will ALWAYS be with me every moment of every day besides sleeping in bed at night. It has gotten me out of a pinch or two here and there and is a sense of security in my pocket. I just feel prepared and safe with it. It may sound crazy to say this about an inanimate object but it is truely a "trusted friend". I have carried other knives in the outdoors but only as a supplement to my farmer, not as a replacement or substitute. In the woods my Farmer still gets the most play time because it does so much, so well. In the street my Farmer is right at home too. I have rambled long enough. I just love this pocket knife :)

Thanks again for all the great advice, guys. Just got mine in yesterday, and I love it. I was going to stow it away for woods carry, but instead, it's hitched a ride with me today, and probably will for a long time. I was even a bit late to work today, cause the edge wasn't quite as hair-popping as I like, so I naturally had to take care of that. I think I found a winner...
