I handled a spyderco back in '95 or '96 that someone I knew bought, and didn't care of it all all. It seemed kind of hard to open with one hand, I didn't care for the serrated edge, and the ergonics didn't fit me at all. Never looked at another one till this year.
On a whim, I bought one of the jess horn limited zdp knives, figuring it would be easy to get rid of if I didn't like it, and found that I liked it enough that I also bought a uk pen knife and a delica the week after! They are all really sharp out of the box and really easy to handle!
A few questions, though.
1. I noticed that some of them don't have a screw pivot. Is that an issue? Or if they get loose enough after a long period of time, can spyderco "renew" them? I'm considering getting a tasman salt for one of my nephews who spends a lot of time around salt water, and would like to know if it can last a few decades.
2. I *really* like the wire clip on the uk pen knife. MUCH more so then the regular clips. Are those going to find their way onto any other models other then the uk pen knife?
2. Looking at the spyderco warranty, I see that if you abuse a blade to the point of breaking the tip off, they'll fix it for 20 bucks. Do they regrind it, or replace the blade, or what? And how would that work for the limited run models with exotic steels for the blades?

At any rate, after being put off by frn handles & not having any interest in spydercos for a long time, I now see them as a pretty incredible value for what you pay and what you get.

Some of the guys around these forums have been carrying the same knives for years. They ain't pretty anymore, but still work perfectly fine. The models without a pivot screw "can" loosen. But it's not something I'd worry about too much. Under normal use the pivot will last a while. If it does become a problem, there are several guys that will rebuild the FRN models. I carry a rebuilt Tasman Salt, that has an adjustable pivot screw, but that's only because I wanted to tweak one for the heck of it. It was unnecessary.

A lot of people seem to prefer the wire clip(I'm not one of them) so it wouldn't surprise me if more knives had it in the future. A few other models currently have them, but I can't remember which ones off the top of my head right now.

I believe they simply regrind the blade. As far as I know, they don't stock replacement blades(too expensive, and too much inventory to be maintained) so even those with exotic steels can be reground.

I just got my Jess Horn ZDP in the mail today (72 bucks on eBay, including priority shipping, insurance, and delivery confirmation!) and it is VERY sweet.
And Lord, this thing is sharp! I actually decided to put it away before I hurt myself :D

Those Spydies grow on ya!
