After a week of waiting, I finally recieved my first Spyderco! The Gayle Bradley is a very nice knife and the F&F is excellent. The knife functions flawlessly, the blade is cenetered and came sharp right out of the box. I was interested in the CPM-M4 steel but very leary of buying a knife not made in the USA. So far so good but I haven't been able to properly test the knife. Carrying it is very easy and I don't mind the weight really at all. I am a fan of larger knives though and usually carry a full size 1911 daily. I plan to use the knife hard and not baby it at all just like my other production knives. I am curious how the edge will hold up! Anybody else have a GB Spyderco? Here are a few pics...

I've had my GB for about 2 months now. I have used it quite a bit, and it still slices paper. M4 is pretty sweet. :D

I am considering doing the mod to expose the entire hole on the blade. From what I have read I don't think I will have to sharpen it for a while, but I can never leave knives alone. I am usually never happy with how sharp they come from the factory. I'm sure I will mess with the GB soon.

I have two. I sent one away to a member of another forum to mod for me. I just let it sit before I had the mod done because it hurt my finger so badly to try and close it. I have only had it back for a day or two, but I like it MUCH better now. Now I need to decide if I want to get my other one modded or what. It still hasn't kicked my Para2 out of my pocket, but I definitely will be carrying my GB on work days since it won't tear up my suit and it much more subtle.

Who does this mod? I love the GB but am a little disappointed in how tough it can be to get to the lock.

I guess I am in the minority here. I find the GB no worse for opening or closing than any other liner lock. I can easily open and close, both left and right handed.

A member on another forum did mine for me. He doesn't "do" the mod for people so I won't give out his info. He and I just happened to have a conversation and one thing lead to another.

It could just be that I don't have "man" hands. My hands are very large, but I have always lived in the city and been a student or office worker. So, my hands are not tough at all. After a day of using/playing with this knife, before the mod, the tip of my thumb would be killing me.

Gotcha. I will admit, when I first got mine, it took a bit of getting used to as compared to the Military.

I have been a mechanic for years and my hands are pretty tough. From opening and closing this knife it has rubbed my thumb raw. Maybe the knife will loosen up over time but I will probably do the mod myself. My only concern is screwing up the carbon fiber.

So here's a stupid question - what is the difference between the newer version of the Gayle Bradley and the original version? Did they actually change anything or am I just remembering incorrectly?

They skeletonized the liners to save weight. I think it lowered the weight by about .5 grams, but that weight is off the top of my head.

loved my first one so much i got another. great knife. so easy to sharpen, and rarely have to

Did the scales grow a bit in the 2nd gen also? I thought I remember the scales being closer to the edges of the liners on the 2nd gen than the first gen's scales.

I would recommend just opening and closing the GB a bunch of times. My lock loosened up quite a bit and now it is much more comfortable to open and close one handed without making my thumb sore. The GB is IMO the best value Spydie that is currently being produced. CF, M4, and the best F&F I have seen is hard to be beat. If it was made in Golden that would be the only thing that would make it better :D
