I purchased a Spyderco knife online that was listed as "new" at a retailer I am not familiar with. Received it today. The knife is cool but it was covered in oil. I have purchased dozens of Spyderco knives this year and have never has one been covered in oil. A few have had a desiccant packet enclosed. The retailer insists that it was oiled-up at the factory. Any opinions out there? TIA Peace. - NotownIsh

Which model? Blade only or handle too? Micarta? G10? So many questions….

Southard Hanan C227GP, Ti/G10. The entire knife was covered. It's a flipper so maybe the oil migrated? Great price and I intend to flip the flipper anyway. Never received a greased up knife before except when I buy a used and over-sharpened OG pocket knife. :)

I can understand the blade having some oil on it but the handle too? Maybe if it was in the plastic baggy for a while and the oil traveled?

Years ago I purchased a Spyderco caly 3 new from BHQ and it came absolutely slathered in oil. My A Purvis Progeny and Civivi Riffle came with a black goo all throughout.

Not sure what the manufacturers are thinking.

They want to start forming that patina early, you know...
lol

The black goo really bothered me, oil not so much. Took forever to clean the good out, ended up soaking the bearing and cage in bore cleaner.

My first thoughts when I hear these examples/stories are that is possible that the Seller is reselling a Customer Return that was hastily put back into stock by a random employee, and the said employee didn’t look to see that the return was fiddled with/attempted tune up/adjusted by that customer, only looking to see that the box and contents were complete.

Why bother? Not your problem.
Just flip it like you said. NIB.
Let the buyer deal with it.
Maybe it will be an OG who won't notice.
Money in your pocket.
Right?

That’s interesting. Where did you purchase it? I can’t seem to find any in stock. Released in 2018 and now discontinued. Honestly, I’d rather have it over oiled instead of dealing with corrosion but that’s just me.

K390. Not a stainless blade. Protective oil is there to prevent corrosion during storage and shipment. Used to be very common with carbon steel traditionals.

The Hanan is s30v, not k390.

OP’s knife is S30V, so it shouldn’t arrive all soaked in oil straight from Spyderco to the Seller/Dealer to the OP, unless perhaps it was previously tinkered with or even being a customer return that’s being resold.
Yah, I’ve also seen Chinese counterfeits of the Hanan, and China is notorious for soaking things in oil. That why I was curious what retailer op bought it from

Might be a good idea to post some good close up pics here , to establish authenticity . Maybe you bought a clone .

I had a couple spydiechefs i got from someone reputable i trust, new stock, oil on handle and blade... odd but didn't seem to be something to be overly concerned about

I've received a handful of Taichung, and especially Seki City, Spydercos NIB that seemed to have quite a bit more oil than necessary.. it's not the norm, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility an assembler at the factory may have gotten a little overzealous..

That said, I'd be more concerned about the legitimacy of the retailer selling a knife that was discontinued 3-4 years ago as "new." I suppose it's possible that it has just been sitting around their back room some place.. idk. If you determine that you trust the retailer and the excessive oil is your only concern as to the knife's authenticity, I wouldn't read too much into it..
