Just saw this post from Tim Wegner about the Blade Show:
"Blade-Tech will be on hand (Booth # 34).
We will be unveiling several new products.
Our new "INJECTION MOLDED" holster line will be on display, molded of NEW! super- tough "PRYLON"(TM.) This proprietary material will re-define toughness and will greatly improve (holster/sheath) performance in extreme hot/cold environments to levels far surpassing what is currently available in the industry today.
We will also be unveiling proto-types of the New "Wegner Designed" folder, a modified and enhanced hybrid of both the C48&C49 that quite possibly could become a new production version @ Spyderco. I have yet to decide on a name for it, and my run a contest to do so in the very near future. (prior to the Blade show). We will keep you posted as things unfold." - Tim Wegner

Any more details? Materials? Lock? Oh happy day!

Sal said that the new design would use a compression lock. Hopefully it would have a larger blade hole as we requested.

Here is an actual quote:

I believe Tim is working on a new version that does include the Compression lock + the other "goodies"

Whoa! This might necessitate a change in plans. Planned on buying the Wegner w/in a wk. But, if would definitely prefer compression lock, and, maybe, a better steel. VG-10 would suit me fine.

Any insight as to how long it takes from prototype to knives available to buy? If it is 4-6 months, can wait. If a year or longer, makes little sense to deprive myself all that time. Help please!?

I would hate to speculate on how long it takes, but I would say it typically takes awhile. Probably longer than 4-6 months.

Anyone know how long it typically takes for a knife to go from the prototype stage to final production?

I think it is at least a year starting with a new design. Once the design is fully prototyped and tested and they decide to make it, it is still another 6 months away at least after that.

If even Sal hasn't seen the new Wegner design yet, I wouldn't expect a production run until 2002-3.

Just about anything but a liner lock, two full liners, screw and bushing for pivot, BG-42, VG-10 and a big hole. That's what this outdoorsman wants in what is otherwise a great knife.
