well i finally did it.. i bought my first spyderco about an hour ago. since i was in a bind to get cash, i sold like 20+ dvds to a used cd store to get the funds to buy my new sydie knife... knife fanatic? i'd say beyond that. the store that i was shopping at and the closest one to me that sells spydercos other than the smokey knife mountainworks down the road an hour and a half, was across town, so i was buying there this afternoon. i ended up getting the
Salt I FRN ~ C88BK. my blade is not serated. it was between this one and the native but i went with the salt I because i "thought" (tell me if i am wrong) that the H-1 steel was better than the 440V... at least i thought remembering seeing someone on here say it.. i was like i wish i had the numbers of a few of the guy on bladeforums so i could call them and ask them which one to get. but i ended up with this knife.. as i stated in another thread pertaining to the spyderco knife i was looking to buy... i will mainly be carrying this one for SD. i wanted something that was small, wouldnt EVER rust, and something that was going to be tough as hell... so i brought this one home... my questions are...

1. do ya think that i made a good choice for SD?
2. is this a tough blade.
3. is this a byrd line knife?? whatever that means
4. do you think that this will be my favorite knife???:p

if anyone else has one of these blades, let me know and tell me what you think about yours. thanks! -mesh

1. yes i do
2. yes it is
3. no it isn't
4. love all your knives equally

:D

H-1 is a very nice bladesteel in my opinion

Congrats on your new purchase. You sure are buying knives awefully fast. Prehaps you should slow down a little while your knowledge and actual functional experience catch up?

The Salt knife isn't very pointy now, is it? I would prefer pointer blades for SD, given the choice. I see the Salt as more of an utility knife. And yes, apparently you'll have to work hard to get it to rust, being so so stain resistant.

haha. yea man i feel ya.

kel_aa - i am going crazy. been buying blades way too much.. and yea its not as pointy as say the native that was my other choice but i went with blade strength... H-1 over 440.. is that a good choice? still i think that this little knife could be deployed in SD if ya ask me.. its not totally pointy but i am telling ya, this baby CAN stab!

440V will hold an edge longer. There really is no such thing as better (ok, well, just avoid 420J2) but 440V heat treated by Spyderco can be a bit hard to sharpen

Well, on the 440 you are talking about....You were saying 440V which is a Crucible CPM steel that is out of production now and better know by the name CPM S60V. It will beat H-1 in terms of abrasion resistance by a long shot...hell it beats S30V in abrasion resistance and edgeholding on very abrasive materials! However, as with all steels, it comes with some less than favorable tradeoff which is why it isn't used anymore as bladesteel and has been largely surplanted by S30V.

Then there is 440C a very nice steel. I would bet it is still more abrasion resistant than H-1 though now it's a much closer comparison. They are both nice steels, but H-1 is very hard at the edge which seems give very good edgeholding in certain applications and more importantly H-1 is absolutely, totally and completely corrosion resistant to anything you will encounter outside a chemistry lab. Not only that, the entire Salt knife is like that. That can be a big....no a huge advantage.

Then there are 440B and 440A and though they are decent bladesteels, there is no question I would pick H-1.

H-1 is really a steel that is hard to compare against other steels. It is chemically very different from other bladesteels, it is not a martensic steel. It is hardened differently, it is differentially hardened, it continues to harden during use. It is harder than most other steels at the edge. It is not overly abrasion resistant. It takes a very nice edge. And it shouldn't be considered a "stainless" steel.....because it doesn't stain less...it doesn't stain at all. It should be called a "rustproof" steel.

Anyways, that's about the long and short of it.

wow i think i got a keeper!!!! i am just kinda second guessing it for SD... after hearing what kel_aa wisely stated.. but then again i am sure it could slash someone up good if it was required of it

The Bryd line is differnt, and it would have said it was a Byrd knife. Second, as of now, the Bryd line (much cheaper line!!), does NOT use H1. H1 will NOT rust, which is the MAIN reason that people buy; Ie: for use on and or around water. I personally take my Salt 1 or Pacific Salt (bigger blade than Salt 1). CONGRATS on a GREAT knife!!

thanks man.. i am happy with this knife but i feel kinda stupid because i bought it primarily to use as a self defense tool.... i use my benchmade tetherknife to cut most other stuff... and i wanted a tough spyderco for protection... and i chose one of the worst SD blades by the 'co.' dammit.

You bought a very good knife with the Salt:thumbup:

However for SD I'd suggest you to sell a few more DVD's and buy a Spyderco Civilian. This knife was designed for self defence only;)

man i would love to get one of the spyderco civies... however, here where i live in TN, i cant carry that blade because it is too long...over 4 inches.. so i am more than likely going to get the Spyderco Karambit.
