New stainless Kiwi

Hi guys, I just took the plunge and got myself one of the new ss Kiwis and must say what a lovely little knife it is. I've always loved Kiwis and really regret selling my original stainless one as I can't seem to find a NIB anywhere at a reasonable price.

This new slip joint model is brilliant though especially since I can carry it legally in the UK so, thanks Spyderco for bringing us a great "old fashioned" pen knife with modern attributes. The ergonomics are lovely and it fits the hand beautifully. The design also does away with the fear of it accidently closing on you.

However, there are a couple of criticisms I have.

Firstly, why is it impossible to open it one handed? The old model was great and very ergonomic but the new Kiwi needs both hands to open it. Is this because of the tension of the spring or has there been a design error with regards to the hole placement? It just becomes another pen knife rather than a Spyderco if you can't open the blade with one hand.

Secondly, why in this day and age does the spring/lock bar (sorry I don't know what it's called) stand proud of the scales. Granted, its only a fraction of a mm but with all the modern machinery nowadays it would be nice to have a perfectly smooth spine to the knife and not to be able to catch my finger nail on it. Okay, it could be argued that it's built to a price but I, for one, would rather pay slightly more and have it perfect than cheap and not.

Overall though I really like this Kiwi and can see it becoming my EDC very quickly.

Stag version offers better grip. Engraving might help on the all steel version, know it improved the one hand opening on my locking SS Kiwi. Inexpensive alternative would be a fob. Gives you something you can get a solid grip on.

Simplest answer to the rest would be that Spyderco took the Kiwi from one extreme (Moki, arguably the best of the Japanese makers) to the other, positioning it as a relatively "low end" slipjoint model made in China.

The Kiwi 3 is a great little knife! I really enjoy mine and have been carrying it along with a larger folder ever since I bought it. I roughed up the scales a bit with some sandpaper; seemed like a good way to reduce fingerprint smudges.

I don't mind the two-handed opening; I think it's pretty common with slip-joints (perhaps I'm just accustomed to it?) Regardless, you can cut yourself pretty good if you spend much time trying to overcome the design, imho. As for the fit & finish, the tension bar on mine sits flush whether it's opened or closed...

Anyway, I'm sure you will be very happy with yours! :)

Hi Paul, did Spyderco drop the original Kiwi for any particular reason you know of? In my opinion dropping it from the line up was a shame as it was a lovely knife. I engraved my one and had it on display at the CLA Game Fair a few years ago where I was giving an engraving demo. One of the guys who was on the stand with me kept pestering to buy it. At the end of the show I caved in and sold it to him :grumpy:.

Here is a pic of it.

I'll probably scratch something on the new Kiwi just for the fun of it.

cheers,

I recently picked one up in stag all I can say is it's an incredible bargain for the price even if the blade steel isn't the greatest the f and f more than make up for it.

That one's a beauty Marcus. Must say I envy whoever had the good taste to purchase it :D although I'm still very fond of the one you did for me...

...as for the why, I'd imagine it's the same reason they drop most models, slow sales, although Lord knows I bought my share, and then some. :o

I love my Stag Kiwi 3..it gets a lot of pocket time as my secondary EDC. As Paul said, the stag inlays do give a nice grip. I remember Sal saying it wasn't meant as a one hand opener, but after having opened it many times, and oiled the pivot a few times, I can now open it one handed without a problem. I love the ergonomics of the 2 choils as well. That fine-tipped wharny blade cuts like crazy!
