My desire to get a 21 started shortly after buying the 25 and from reading all the posts on here about how much smoother the 21 is over the 25. Already knowing I wanted one with dual thumb studs since I carry in my left pocket and I’m right handed, which allows me to open with either hand. Haven’t seen a lot of 21’s on the exchange with dual thumb studs. I started looking around and discovered CRK made one for Wilson Combat that had the starburst Wilson pattern and dual thumb studs. WOW no brainer here besides the pattern will match the two Wilson Combat 1911’s I own.

Long story to follow;

On Sunday December 29th I placed my order with Wilson online. The next day on the 30th I called to verify that it was actually in stock and the lady said yes, it already shipped! Couldn’t get much better than that… Monday night when I got the UPS tracking number it said it would be delivered that Friday, not bad considering Wednesday was New Years. On Thursday I got an update that said I wouldn’t receive the knife until Monday the 6th which was disappointing but not a big deal since I was working all weekend anyway. Friday morning I got a UPS delivery update showing we were back on for Friday which got me all excited again but by afternoon they switched it back to Monday.

Sunday afternoon we got hit with a snowstorm that dumped about 15 inches of snow on us along with -18 degree temperatures so needless to say it wasn’t delivered Monday. UPS updated their tracking site to show it would be delivered Tuesday but when Tuesday came they changed it to Wednesday. Wednesday it showed it was on the truck and out for delivery. Around 9:00pm it was back at the terminal saying “Emergency conditions beyond UPS’ control”. The next morning it was back on the truck for delivery again but that night it was back at the terminal with the same message. Friday came and I kept checking the status and it kept showing “Deferred” for the status which I thought was kind of odd so I did an online chat with UPS trying to understand why we had been getting USPS packages and mail for the past two days but not UPS. At first the lady was kind of short with me quoting what the system already told me but I asked if the driver had written any notes such as county roads were too bad or my driveway was bad, something… The lady then said they just scanned your package into the system and I would have it that afternoon. I then asked if I didn’t show up would they be delivering Saturday or would I have to wait another weekend. The lady said they hadn’t made that decision for UPS Ground to work on Saturday yet but assured me I would receive it that day. As soon as I got off chat with her I stated watching the tracking status thinking there was probably a delay from what she saw to what I could see. The package never showed it was out for delivery so I figured she just blew me off and it would be next Monday before it was delivered. Around 5:30PM I was out in the barn feeding the horses when here came my UPS driver down the driveway. After asking him how far behind they were from Christmas and the bad weather he said in the 29 years that he has been working for UPS he has never worked on a Saturday until this coming Saturday! So from the time it was mailed in Arkansas to the time it was delivered to me in Indiana was 12 days, I’ll never complain about 4 day waits again!

Last night and today at work I have been exercising the new knife a lot to where I think I have a callus on my thumb. I do know when I get home I need to take it apart and grease it because it feels like its dragging. This knife has a birth date of 11/19/12 so maybe the grease has just dried up. It cane in the old box with a hand written birthday card as well as being wrapped in the Chris Reeve cloth. I see what the rest of you meant by the old packaging being more of a personal touch.

First impressions; this knife is a lot sharper than my 25 was out of the box! This one will cut paper as well as shave hair off your arm, the 25 didn’t do so well until I hit it with the EdgePro. The 21 feels lighter in the hand and the blade is noticeably thinner and lighter as well as the grind and shape being noticeably different. Blade is perfectly centered and the milling on the scales is flawless! This knife sure is a looker and feels good in the hand. I believe once it breaks in and I get some grease in it tonight it will deploy easier but as of right now the 25 has it beat as far as ease and smoothness. It’s really like two different knives rather than just improvements from the 21 to 25, it’s like Sebenza and Super-Sebenza.

Here are some crappy pictures I took on my workbench when opening the box for the first time last night;

Beautiful!

The Starbenza is a great knife, one of my favorites and my most used.

By the way, I'm pretty sure they don't do hand written cards anymore just an fyi.

Nice pics by the way.

I could be wrong but this one dated from 2012 looks hand written. At least it looks a lot different than the card that came with my 25.

Awesome knife! I would like to try the starburst grip soon. Sorry to hear about your wait, I get antsy the minute I place an order!

My card is hand written and was from May 2013, when did they stop hand writing? FYI I have a umnumzaan TNK tanto.

Thanks. The starburst grip does seem to be more grippy than the smooth 25. Umnumzaan will probably be my next one. But I swear, it will be my last! ;)

Haha, good luck making it your last! What part of Indiana are you from? I reside in Indy

I'm west of you near the Illinois line, just north of Rockville, "the covered bridge capital of the world"

Yeah, they are kind of addicting.

Fantastic and functional. Love that knife. I like how the grooves carry on to the lock bar, but not in the areas where they would catch on your pocket. Very well thought out knife.

Very Nice!! While reading your post I chuckled a little.. Talk about taking the long way around the barn Cowboy!!:D The knife is beautiful!! and the post was great!! Thanks for sharing my friend!!
All the best!!

If you will look at where the pen stops writing in the loops in the right hand corner you will find thay is almost a perfect match to thousands of other cards. Same with the way it overhangs the dotted line on the bottom left. I believe they have two or three different stamps as I have seen different ink or different accentuations; but I have held several cards together and they have looked 100% the same in every way.

Chris himself has said that he doesn't even review each knife himself anymore so I doubt he is handsigning cards if he is not looking at the knife.

Of course, I could be wrong as I am certainly not a forensic handwriting analyst in any way. =D

But again, great blade!

The signatures are all stamped or printed now, and as you have mentioned are all identical. On my 21's the description/type of the knife is still hand written, as well as the date. On my 25 only the date, and the silver thumb-lug option is hand written.

My 25 is pretty smooth! I only handled a micarta 21 once at Blade, but I didn't really notice anything different for the opening

Thanks. I noticed how they did the grooves as well. In fact I have been looking at the Star-Tac and noticed they do the same thing with it as well but on the Umnumzaan Chris doesn't carry the groves onto the lock bar.

Thanks Zaan Man! Yeah I had to share that story because as I look back it's funny now however it was getting rather frustrating at the time. It's like I was 7 years old and someone kept moving Christmas out just one day at a time. :)

Yeah I agree on the signature part, it looks identical to my 25. It's the card itself I was talking about that looks hand written at least compared to the computer generated writing on my 25's card. But like you said I'm no hand writing expert either and I have no other Star-Benza cards to compare it to so I will take your word on it. I watched the same video too where Chris says he doesn't check every knife going out of the shop. Good thing or he would never come up with new improvements.

Thanks again Supercoup.

I agree with kidcongo, in fact I just put my two cards side by side and on the Star-Benza it sure looks like Wilson Combat and the date are hand written to me as well as the date on my 25. Originally I thought my 25 was all computer generated but now I have to agree with Kid. Here is a picture side by side;

Yeah, right now my 25 is a lot smoother than the 21 but I remember when the 25 was new it was pretty stiff. I'm sure the 21 will get smoother but I'm with you, I find it hard to believe it will be that much smoother than the 25 but I'm no expert. Thanks for looking.

Congrats on a great knife. The StarBenza is one of my favorites, glad to see more Hoosier's getting into CRK.
