Who knew that you could reseal those little foil packets that Starbucks Via instant coffee comes in? :)

I've been looking for a way to contain Fire Paste in a smaller container and wasn't sure a drinking straw would do it. I'll moniter this over the next weeks to see if there is any problem with corrosion. It took a couple of times to heat enough to seal it, but better than using a lighter, given the contents!

That's pretty creative. What did you use to heat seal the open end? Don't tell me it was the grip on your speed loader. That knurling looks like the pattern on the heat sealed bit.

Thats cool. But I gotta ask how many times while heat sealing a package full of fire gel it just went up in flames on you :D I stuck some fire gel in one of the small hand sanitizer packages and it seems like a good compromise in size and volume.

what is fire paste:confused:
Fire Paste is a firestarting product made by Coghlan's.

I used my FoodSaver Vacuum Sealer.

No Flare-ups, but that is why I opted NOT to go the fire straw route!

I've asked for one at a Starbucks near my office.
They said 'we don't have coffee beans named firepaste'.

Never used Fire Paste before. Saw it at the surplus store the other day.
How good is it and how would you use it?

Thanks

neat idea, I suppose you could use this method with alot of resealable packets,

I see you marked it, good call wouldnt want a hot cup of fire gel in the morning :barf:

How about a syringe?

In my opinion, Probably not a great idea, alot of bulk for the amount of fluid you would get, plus they can be very touchy if you press them wrong or if a cap is loose. its easy to end up with a pocket full of fire gel.

It is awesome. Squirt some on wood then light. Catches easily and I've gotten wet wood to light too.

Fire paste does work. it will dry out in the tube if you store it for long periods tho..smell freaking awful when it does too! Brother Mistwalker suggested hand sanitizer as a good alternative (63% alcohol I think he said..) lets you carry a double use item that come in a near crush proof container. Where is our pyromanic freind anyway?..he's too quiet!

My buddy and i like using cotton balls that have some rubbing alcohol on them, and jsut seal them in a small ziploc bag.. very light weight, and when started with the magnesium striker.. only takes two strikes, and it starts..and that cotton ball burns for a few minutes while you get tinder going.

FLIX,

Is that the same old stuff that used to be around in the 80s? Another one that came in the toothpaste tube was called "Fire Ribbon" I think. Is that fire paste sawdust saturated parrafin?

I used to make a concoction out of Gulf Wax and other canning supplies my mother had to buy for canning and I would mix sawdust in with that molten wax or parrafin. I guess if you did that now and used fatwood shavings using one of them pencil sharpener things...you could really make a nasty firestarter. Shave a bunch of magnesium powder as well, etc.

Flix - I like the way your thinking.
Is the firepaste going to react with the container?
Is vaseline considered as firepaste?
I'm thinking a straw will be stronger?

While we're on the subject of fire paste and fire starters, let's not forget good old fashioned Sterno. Seal some up in a container, and you're good to go. They also make a semi-liquid gel — called, oddly enough, Sterno Fire Starter — that works pretty well, too.

Good use of materials.

I want an emergency fire starter like a short road flare. Something the size of a 35mm film can would allow carrying a couple with no big space or weight issues. Road flares will get wettest punky wood going. Something with a 5-10 minute burn time should do the trick.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

fishkev236 - I think you'll have better luck using vaseline on the cotton balls. It won't evaporate so fast and it will prolong the burn time of the cotton balls substantially. To keep the messiness factor to a minimum, you can seal them in sections of a plastic drinking straw. (Do a search for "Firestraw.")

Don, I'm not sure what is in Fire Pate. I thought it was more of a napalm-like concoction, but I'm not quite sure. It is packaged in a metal tube, so I was concerned about repackaging it in plastic.

dartanyon, I chose the package I did because they are a metallic foil pouch. I am monitering them to see if there is anything reactive that may compromise the package.

Bob, the Sterno jel might also be fine in these little packets.

Dale, I've been thinking about coming up with something like that. I recently posted a thread on homemade smoke bombs, and the chemical formula could be altered just slightly to make a 'flare." I'm not so sure about the twist light feature, though. Nevertheless, even if you had to light a fuse, the idea of a mini-flare jetting out some super high heat flame for about a minute could make emergency fire starting much easier.

Many of these products are designed to pre heat back pack stoves in cold weather. A small amount is placed under the evap tube and ignited. Acts as a kick start.

You guys talking about mini flares ... wouldn't an REI storm match be considered a mini flare?

And you don't have to make them!
