new starmate....lock-up problem?

I recently bought a new Spyderco Starmate at a knife show. I think it is a great design and it is the first spyderco for me. When I bought the knife, my inspection of it was fairly brief, I opened it up and checked it out and all seemed well. Now that I have had a chance to use it a bit I have found a problem. If I open it up with a bit of pressure on the blade laterally (I am not talking about an excessive force here, just fairly normal pressure from my thumb in the opening hole) the lock will not engage when the blade is fully opened. When this pressure is released, the lock engages, but not in a convincing way. As a test, I have duplicated this opening on my only other knife, a benchmade mini afck, and there is no such problem at all., even if I apply a much greater force. I have cycled the starmate several times in hopes that it just needed some break-in time, but the problem persists. The opening action also seems a bit less smooth than I am used to as well, perhaps this is a related problem? If I could, I would take this knife back to the dealer I bought it from, but it is no longer an option. Does this sound like a problem that the spyderco warranty will recognize, and rectify? For me, this knife is a big investment, and I would like to put it to work rather than worry about whether or not the lock is trust-worthy.

Thanks,

Grant - Can't tell from the description what the problem might be. I think you'll have to send it in with a clear description of the problem. Sorry for the incovenience. I'm sure we'll make it right.
