I just received my new Starmate. It's #336 and sllichk to the max. I have the first one so I wanted to match up with part serrated blade on this on but, I think the shape of the blade will make a good plain edge knife for all around usage. So I think I'll save this one back and get a plain edge when they come out. I like the way the lock is nestled in the handle for a thinner knife but, due to the overall shape and style of the handle you still get a hand full feel when you hold this knife. This one is a winner.

I just purchased a plain edge starmate at a local shop. It's #474. This knife is indeed sweet. My only concern is the logo on the blade. It isn't engraved like on the Military so I hope it doesn't come off.
Is it okay to use a tuff cloth on it?
Also, Sal or Danelle, If the logo does get damaged, could we send it back in to get redone? Other than that, this if a great knife.

I'm pretty sure this is some kind of acid etching. I'm a Jeweler so I have a loupe and I naturaly had to look this over and the etching looks deep as does the emblem on the handle, I believe is s. steel and not Alum. like the BMs Butterfly. The black in side I'm not sure of but that is easy to replace. I always fill the lettering and the spyders with perm.marker ink and when it is dry I wipe off with a business card.

Ibwheat.
The engraving on the C55 is done by laser also the emblem is S/ST.
RT.
The engraving should not be affected by a Tuff Cloth.
Hope you enjoy your knives.
Vince.

Ibwheat,

I picked up #s 394 and 400 in combo edge yesterday. One is for Greg Mete aka Kodiak PA. Haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet but initial impressions are extremely positive. It's a military in Terzuola trim... very solid lock up and nice ergonomics.

Don't start stuff like that... I have been lusting for one since I got my full sized Starmate... Come on Sal!

A microstar by spyderco?
I'll sure need one of those!
Until then I'll can't await a plain-edge starmate. Well my combo edge starmate helps.

of the country from my scanner) of the new Double 8 catalog. It has a thumb stud and not a hole. Maybe Mr. Terzuola will be amused by its presumption.

Yack! Those folks are quick! Note that the knife has the two screw and lanyard setup identical to the prototype Starmates, plus the same emblem placement (changed to a "Master" logo). Is this taken from Bob T.'s customs, or was this rip-off actually built from Spyderco's prototype Starmate pics???

Either way, do me a favor and spit on that page of the catalog

There is a picture of a smaller Starmate proto listed as C-55 on www.knifecenter.com

go into brand names under Spyderco, arrow down to Starmate. There isn't any info other than due out soon for the larger size. Also check out Spyderco possibilities for some neat pictures of other prototypes.

True, but Spyderco themselves have had a pic of this prototype up for a while. It is a freakish similarity, isn't it? I mean, the shape is obviously taken from Bob T.'s own Starfighter, but the handle layout seems identical to the Spyderco prototype... as opposed to the production which has three spacer screws. Rip-offs always bother me, but this is an especially bad one because it probably beat the real thing to market.

Corduroy - Double 8 copied the custom Bob "T" Starfighter. It was on the cover of their catalog in Jan '99. These guys are the origin of most copies in the US.

They'll probably sell 500 copies for every 1 Spyderco or Bob "T" sells. I believe we went through this on the General forum on the Microtech Socom Rip-off thread.

Making these guys resepctable is like making a politician honest. Gigand is part of their organisation. Many ELU feel that this type of behaviour is OK.

I've seen these knives in the stores. The first thing I would ask is who would want a knife with a picture of the devil on it? Most of these are being sold out of a big display unit by an outfit called Ruko. They remind me of the Sabre displays twenty five years ago. Most of those knives would rust in the display while you watched. Some people just have a taste for that kind of stuff.I know a dealer here in Wichita that keeps a large shoe box on the bottom shelf of the unit to collect the stuff that comes back because of defects. When the sales guy comes around he replaces it with more stuff.Seems like more trouble than it is worth for a dollar two ninety eight profit to me.

I wonder what Double 8's or Fred Carter's reaction would be if some other manufacturer, without asking first, made a dead ringer for the Spectrum (cool knife for the price) and I sold it as a "C-Design"?
