My waiting game came to an end today as I went to visit my parents. They were recently spending some time in Florida on vacation and while they where there I asked Dex if he would be able to ship a knife to them to bring home for me. Enter my new BK11!
Everything came neatly packed in the box with extra padding and a hand written note. The personal touch of the service he offers is fantastic! Not only did he send me extra sets of stainless hardware, he also included the hex key for both the hardware and the custom sheath he sent to me a few months ago!
(no that's not blood on the paper in the last photo - it was a 'drip through' sheet we were using while my kids were drawing with markers. My daughter really presses down hard lol)
First thing I had to do was smooth out the coating on the blade or it may bind while trying to get it out of that awesome leather sheath (I was warned beforehand by Dex about this)
After I accomplished this I made sure I tested the sharpness again just because I thought I may have hit the edge.... nope still razor sharp.
I then put on the micarta scales. When I did this I felt the knife ever so slightly moving under them. My first reaction was that I did not tighten them up enough (as I always have a habit of over tightening to failure). Upon closer inspection I saw that one scale had slightly more material on it in the cut-out section then the other. So I busted out the sandpaper again and ever so gently removed material until both sides fit on there like a glove!
Next came the union of Steel and Leather!
All I have to say is DAMN! what a nice fit. Without the coating completely removed she fits in there tight. I have no problems removing the knife from the sheath, but as an added bonus- It's child proof! My 4 year old couldn't pull it out
Like all things that Daddy gets sharp and pointy, he likes to handle them. First thing he said to me "This knife is MY size! is it for me?", I assured him when he was responsible enough he would get his own.
I then took some gratuitous family photo's
Then I had to test the comfort!
In the cross draw position standing or sitting you don't even realize it is there. I spent the next hour with it on my belt like that. Then I got another idea of how it could potentially be carried If I wanted to use it for an offhand draw.
Standing again you don't even notice its there. Sitting takes a little bit of getting used to. You have to sit straight up with good posture or have more of a slouch then usual for it to be comfortable while sitting. I found this to be the case while navigating every chair in my parents house and while driving home.
As far as the knife itself goes, I have only used it to cut an skin an apple. I found it extreamly comfortable to use. The size and 3 finger grip seems perfect for my hand. I also juggled it a little bit in multiple other hand positions that one would use for fencing or self defense and found them all extreamly comfortable.
I would definitely 100% recommend both this knife and Dex's custom sheath. If you were wondering they could be found here;
