New Sticky?

I don't know why I get these requests as I am only the Marguerita Moderator, that is I am in charge of making sure all such drinks served here in the forum are real margueritas, not those silly girl-drinks all run through a blender until they have the consistancy of a slurpy. Even worst are the flavored margueritas, such as those served at TGIFridays. I put them in the same catagory as I do China-Made Taylor Sch****s which are pieces of crap.

However... I have had a couple of guys write that perhaps the sticky we have now, where to find old schrades, has run it's course. And a suggestion that we have a sticky concerning carbon and Schrade + Stainless, as those questions come up again and again. The thought is that too many stickies can make a forum look less tidy. I agree. Finding a cache of hidden old-new stock Schrades is now important enough to rate it's own thread.

As the Schrade Knives Collectors Forum is the most democratic (bordering on anarchy) forum here, we need other opinions or votes before I contact Bastid or someone to help us out.

Please vote:

1... Replace existing Sticky with 'Schrade+ and Carbon Steel'?
2... Just add the steel Sticky and keep the 'Schrade Sightings" sticky?
3... Leave well enough along, ya meddling marguerita guzzler!!!

Phil

Go ahead and replace the present sticky with the steel sticky, all threads run their course until they have served the intended purpose.

Now go back to the bar and mix up another batch, typing makes me thirsty.

I personally like the idea of an informative sticky about Schrade+ and 1095 carbon steel. It is a popular topic, for sure.
I think the current sticky may be losing it's legs, as well.

So, that is a vote for #1 for me.....and I'm in for a good quality, no frills, margarita as well. I've even got a few shirts. :D

Bill

I agree that the current sticky has pretty well served it's purpose. And that the oft repeated questions about Schrade steels (1095HC, 440A, 420HC) deserve a preserved thread. I did a brief cruise searching for posts by the former Schrade employees, but alas, most were deleted in the cleanup and shift to the archives. I kept a lot of their quotes myself, but that will require a bit of time and effort to retrieve as well. Perhaps I can work up another ramble explaining the subject as well as it can be explained, so that the bulk of the information can be placed in one header post. Unless someone else would like to volunteer. If so, then please do!

I would also vote for #1

It's fun to hear about where to get em, but then they all get cleaned out, and then the info is no longer useful.

And next time Phil, more salt. :D

That would be my fault, Glenn. I am used to my salt and lime on a side dish next to the straight shots, margarita up front, easy on the rocks. By the way, my favorite margarita glass is a small fishbowl on a stem. I find the oversize snifter runs dry approximately when the five shots are gone, and the barkeep can freshen them all at once, unless I am the barkeep. In that case, it is easier to just refresh the shot glasses. No need to stand and walk.

I agree and concur with phil on all points that he has made especially his references to alcohol and various foreign made cutlery. My feeling is that it would be a positive move and I support anything, or action which continues to make this one of the best forums around. I will agree with the majority since I feel this is inevitably what will be the best for the most concerned. LT. PS See now wasent that a nice, subdued, answer.

WHO ARE YOU???and what have you done with LT??? I vote number one option primarily because I think it's right but also because I want to be popular. (snicker)

Paul

I'm all in favor of a new sticky, I never could afford to drive or fly to those exotic locations where NOS Schrades were reportedly found anyway ;)

How about making it more comprehensive than just the various blade steels by including the list of Schrade model numbers and names that Dale, Codger, and others have compiled? Even better, incorporate the blade steel and handle material info on the same list of model numbers or would that be getting too close to replicating Robert Clemente's book?

I believe you hit the nail on the head with that one, Redshanks. There is a text limit to a post here, as I have found while posting my pattern rambles. Also, a limit to the attention span of a knife enthusiat seeking the answer to a simple question, such as "did Schrade ever make forged knives?"

Perhaps the question of patterns could be another sticky, though I fear it also would be a book even without the complete catalog descriptions.

Just my humble opinion, once again.
Codger

Humble...humble...did he just say his humble opinion?? ;)

OK, so he is pretty knowledgeable about FIXED blades...country cookin' (where the he!! was my invite for dinner?)...oh, and vinyl (he says he makes pools...I've seen some ads about other uses for vinyl  , and I think LT once tried to fly using it...or maybe that was some other material?)...Anyway, I guess he spins a good yarn in a Samuel Clements (or was that Roger Clemens?) kinda way.

Sorry Phil, about the detour. :o

Can I vote for #1 again?

I like #1 and Redshanks idea.
We could post a index like list of the OT and UH's without a lot of detail that would not be the same as having the real detail from Roberts or other written material. We might even be able to compile a pretty good list of the others as well. Could be a large sticky.
IMHO.
Larry

Irv...er, sorry...Larry, Larry,

Et tu Brute?? :D And, in code.

Bill

Ok, Ok...that is a good idea.

I vote for #1. I think the steel questions keep re-surfacing often enough that it warrants it's own sticky.

I won't mind if the current sticky is replaced. But instead of a sticky bout carbon/stainless, I think a "Dating Schrade Knives" would be a better choice. Diagnostic packaging, tang stamps, brands, etc.

While it's true that too many stickies tend to make a forum unsightly, having two or three isn't bad.

Whatever you guys decide is fine by me.
-Bob

I agree with Bob W, I think that rather than a Sticky on Schrade Steel there should be a FAQ Sticky, which could include as mentioned: steels, stamps, packaging, etc..

I like the idea of a Sticky for Sightings, but it may need to be purged regularly as old posts become obsolete, I wonder if there is a way to delete older posts from a thread or if the "Sticky" characteristic can be removed and a new Sticky thread created every several months or so.

Luis

BobW and Luis bring up good points. I can ask Bastid or cougar allen if the Schrade Sightings thread can be purged to keep it current.

A Schrade FAQ threat, combining steels, packaging, dating? Good idea.

Phil

I like the idea of a FAQ thread. It should help reduce some of the same posts that pop up every couple of weeks.
I think the "where to find" thread is about dead. If for some reason someone runs across a big cache of Schrades (unlikely) then it would probably warrant a new post anyway.

 Another vote for #1 !
As a greenhorn,I would also like to see the Model # list as a sticky, especially if it was added to as necessary. It could also include box design pics/dates used.
Since some ebay sellers wont volunteer that their knives are Taylor/China made and some wont answer e-mails asking if their item was made in China,a VILLIANS box-pic list would also be helpful.
It's readily apparent that the "regulars" who post on this forum are very knowleadgable about Schrade knives, but we greenhorns are just learning.
I already have 4 files of info that I've copied from forum threads, but sorting it in some kind of order takes time.I don't see that having several "stickies" is a detriment to the forum unless there are technical/maintenance problems with doing that.

I have posted a Schrade FAQ thread and I think it incorporates the excellent ideas presented above. I have asked Cougar Allen to make it a 'sticky'. It can be added to, expanded, whatever the membership thinks right. If you like the new thread and think it can work, please post here so Cougar can see I haven't gone beyond your wishes and acted unilaterally. This thread will be what all of us make of it.

I can also ask Cougar to move other posts into it and we do have some classics here. Oh, make that 'anyone' can make any request of Cougar or the other mods concerning this forum. I simply cannot stand to see good ideas lost and forgotten, which is why I am sticking my nose into the sticky situation.
