Have a small sabenza 21 plain and one bocote inlay and both seem very stiff to me. Neither free drop. Is this just how they are? Taken them both apart numerous times and still hard to open... going on a month now for both with every day carry

When they are new, they require some cycling to break them in. The mating surfaces on all the pivot parts have not worn into each other yet.
So, it is pretty normal. For God's sake, don't take the advice you find posted all over the web and sand the washers..you won't like the results.
Either let it wear in through use, or cycle it a few dozen times. It's not necessary to engage the lockbar or close it all the way. Rotating the blade in this manner will speed up the process somewhat.

It will free drop keeping the screws semi loose but I consider one of the very best things about my sabenza is not having to use loctite
