Well I have been a sandpaper sharpener for years and never had a bench stone nicer than a cheap Home Depot special $6 Norton combo stone. So today I decided to get a Norton C/F combo India stone, 8x3 from Knifecenter.com so I don't have to worry about having the sandpaper in stock when I need it. I decided on this stone mostly because of the reviews I read here.

Now, is there anything I need to do to a new stone? How should I store it, in a hard case? Is water the best for this stone? Basically, I don't want to trash a good stone right off the bat.

Noton India stone is one of the tougher stones out there, just use light pressure and it will last your lifetime. I boiled mine for 15 minutes to get the oil out and use it with dishsoap and water. That's personal preference, mineral or other light oil works just as well, but the stone comes loaded - if you want to use water you'll have to boil it. I crossed two forks, head to toe and rested the stone on them to keep it off the bottom of the pot (could crack the stone if it gets heated unevenly). They work very well with some compound as a finisher, either on newspaper or leather. I just use some white compound from Sears. For storage I just wrap mine in a rag or a few sheets of newspaper.
