im looking for a new straight razor. i have a verry small fund for this. i want a good razor but i cant afford to pay too much for the name. im looking for a beginners razor. with full intention of purchasing a quality name brand. but for now im looking for a no frills meat and potatoes razor. any suggestion would be appreciated. thanks, willy

Why new? Your best option is to get a vintage one and send it in for a professional honing.

If you insist on buying new, there's some Made-in-China ones on eBay ($13 shipped), they do shave well but some have serious issues with build quality.

Go on straight razor place.

You can have an old razor, that is not pretty, but that is shave ready and a great shaver. I got a few there for around 30$.

there are a few guys on SRP that can point you at the Chinese made "gold dollar" razors, which get very good reviews, and are AFAIK the cheapest functional new razors available. there is a lot of cheap junk (some made in the USA and Germany) that isn't worth your time, but its worth a look.

Actually...the Gold Dollar razors aren't that populair over there.

Best chance is just to get a secondhand one.

given the options, a gold dollar is like a pontiac, why drive that when there is a much nicer car in the garage? but they do work, and they are better than everything else at the price point.
