Hey everyone, I was on Youtube today and this video popped up on the sidebar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abmXkRbxc-o&feature=player_embedded#!
It's a video from Monkey Edge (monkeydepot.com new knife only website) that is giving the low down on a new Strider fixed blade.

The knife is called the BR and it looks pretty different from the regular Strider design. It's got a small brass hilt and stepped G10 handle slabs. It comes in both black oxide or tiger stripped blade finishes and costs $575.

I think the design looks really cool and I'm pretty sure I'll be getting my hands on one. But I haven't heard anything about this knife anywhere else, so I was wondering if anyone has one already or has held one or knows anything at all about them. I'm specifically wondering if it's 1/4" thick or 3/16".

Anything else about it or whatever on the topic would be great to hear.

Thanks,
Ben

EEEEnteresting.... I hadn't heard anything about this. Thanks for the heads up. I don't know how I feel about it yet, and I think I'd have to see one in person. I don't really like the striping on the second one he showed in the video....too high contrast. I kinda like the first one, but it feels a bit Tacticlol, considering the blacked out appearance with a bright brass hilt....not that anything Strider makes isn't completely functional. I don't know, if it carries their warranty, I'd be wiling to give it a go...

Yeah, I definitely won't be getting one soon, I'd have to find out a lot more before that. And yes, I haven't heard a single word about it anywhere and I find that raelly surprising since Strider has a good following.

I like the overall design it has and I think it'd be useful. For some reason it screams "dive-knife" to me, obviously it's just the brass hilt that reminds me of a SOG Scuba knife, but still.

Anyway, I hope this thread puts the word out there and brings in some more responses since it's such a leap from Strider's traditional style.

I bought the BR from MonkeyEdge and returned it for a refund 2 days after I received the knife.

The one I got has black oxide coating and the thickness is .20'' before the guard, the knife looks awesome both in the pics and in-person, it has a distinct old-school feel with modern tacticool to it as advertised.

The overall fit and finish is alright, but the blade is pretty dull near the belly area, in fact none of the striders I own has shaving sharp factory edge, so I am ok with it as long as it is not very dull like my MT-L.

The brass hilt has some sort of "coating" on it to protect it from the elements I guess, I have no idea what it is, but it is definitely quite different from the brass hilts on other knives.

The only problem with the knife is its handle, the stock and the new G10 are both too thin for my taste, I have medium hands and just did not feel right holding it, and the contouring on the handle only made it more diffcult for me to achieve a firm grip on the handle.

A nice knife to look at and keep as a collectible, but at $575, I would recommand you to hold it in person before buying.

$575 Dollars?

Is it a Busse?

Does it come with a free Sebenza?

Oh, it's a...

Nevermind; I'll go back to reading my Cold Steel (aka Tiger stripes for less) catalog now.

Even though you didn't keep it, that's some great first hand news :-D

It's too bad the knife turned out to be too thin, but would you know if it feels about as thin as all the other Strider G10 grips? And for some sort of measure, would you say your hands are like the Monkeyedge guy's from the video, or a little smaller/bigger? Either way, the thin G10 grips looks to me like a running theme for Strider.

It's also too bad to hear it's not a .25" blade, i know the difference is pretty minor, but it would have been nice to have that extra .05". Did it's still feel like it had some heft though?

And yeah, the blade sharpness is a downer, I supposed you'd either have to sharpen it up yourself or send it off to have a nice edge put on it. I'm never really sure what my take is about Strider's edges; like i supposed they're going for a good "utility edge" that will last, but at the same time, it's a fucking expensive knife so why isn't it very sharp? I can understand on some of their other blades, but if this is a take on an older style camp/tac blade, wouldn't it have a sharp belly for skinning or whatever else you get up to?!

I know this is a broad question and it's pretty vague since you didn't use it, but would you say it'd be a useful camp knife or not?

I just dropped the $$$ after seeing the video on MonkeyEdge. I didn't much care for the striped version but I was able to get the black oxide from another site. I have medium size hands, if the stepped G10 makes the feel too narrow for me, I can always return it. IMO, the brass hilt with black oxide/G10 looks great, I think Strider did a great job merging the tactical/classic look. I've always owned S30V steel so I'm anxious to see how the 3V works out for me. All in all I think it's a great looking knife and can't wait to put it to use.

I'll repost when the knife arrives.

I have had my knife for a little while now, and the blade is quite a turn on. It's a super tough hard knife and it is Sharp.I was surprised to read that someone posted that his wasn't Sharp. Strider doesn't usually send dull products. I was able to shave anything with it. From receipts to leather to plastic and hairs on my arm. (Not my whole arm... Just a test) and if yours isn't "sooooo" Sharp about 20 swipes (with the right angle) on a steel would fix that problem. Definitely not your average combat knife because due to closeness of the hilt to the top of your hand you have limited flexibility with it. The grip is comfortable when holding upright like a butcher or when using the thumb grooves but I like to put my thumb closer to my hand on the back of the blade on any knife but the hilt is where I would do that... So I can't. It would be a REALLY AWESOME camp knife if properly taken care of. Considering the strength, solid construction and nice finish, it's almost worth the price. Hearing that this model won't be around much longer (and knowing I have one in practically mint condition) makes the price seem alright for the collectible. Now I keep it wrapped up and stowed away for the day it will no longer be around. But as a camp knife I'm almost tempted to get another one just for that. Since the blade is a little thinner than a good .25", it makes it a little easier to cut through large things. If you don't know what I mean, take a razor Sharp fillet knife and razor Sharp strider and try to push it through cardboard. The fillet knife would win cuz it's thinner. For a camp knife I wouldn't want .25" so this knife is great. Easily sharpened if you have a diamond sharpening steel. Great knife to have. Only adjustment I would make is make the handle a little further from the hilt but oh well. You get what you pay for.

Hey! What do we have here...

I've had mine for about 6 months now. I have abused it slightly with no edge damage and no more sharpening than a little stropping with fine compound and it cuts like a laser.

I have used it to make handle for a TOPS/Vector001 ECO hawk head. I chopped down a maple sapling, chopped a length for a baton and then batoned it cross grain twice to have clean ends. It held up well, and I was really wailing on it.

More recently I opened up the little choil with a dremel so I could actually use it. I like it a lot more now. I need to find a way to refinish the area I ground out, it's quite shiny right now.
