For quite awhile I've been wanting to come up with a different style wood handle and yesterday morning durring the sermon it came to me so I drew it out before I forgot it. I made it a reality today. I didn't even measure the blade but it looks to be just over 4" with around 8 1/2" overall. The blade is 5160, wrought iron fittings and a dyed monkeypod handle.

I like it Ray. The basic "derringer" design has been around for a while but you have given it a little More meat. It should fit in the palm very nicely and give a good grip and control. :)

Ray, I never get tired of looking at your work. I really like this latest one, a LOT! You have the perfect finish, too. You must be hand sanding down to 1500 or so? what ever it is, it really brings out your steel. The monkey pod handle, I like very much, too. Nice shape and finish, all the way around. Hey, you got sore monkeys running around your neighborhood? where you get your monkey pod, and do you recommend stabilizing it? It looks like pretty hard stuff, and good looking.

Bang, bang........ John, the monkeypod wood comes Hawaii. A friend of mine gave me a whole solid table top of it a few years back. Its a really light wood as far a weight goes but very stable. Never cared for its natural color but I love it after its been dyed. It has a couple draw backs because it burns your eyes and it also makes me sneeze.

Yup, looks comfy indeed. I think you have a winner to put with all your other winners. I may have mentioned it before, but that blade shape / guard / hilt setup is now asignature for you. With the new handle it still looks all Ray-Richard... I reckon this type handle actually has another bonus - it allows increased comfot while being able to reduce the length of the handle and overall length of the knife. Jason.

Thanks for the comments! Expect to see more wood handled knives of mine to appear in the comming weeks. I love to use stag but its so tuff to find a piece of it that will work and I don't want to burn it up real fast. I've got so much of a wood handle stash that I have a hard time finding what I'm looking for so this style will help with that problem. About the only problem I forsee is instead of 1 1/2" material I'm going to need wider material. Lots of ideas flowing threw the old brain at this time, just hope some get stuck in there....... :D

how did you make the steel that is closest to the blade?

Not a simple answer I know :)
