New style wave plier play?

Hey all,

I picked up a new Wave a while back, and never used it much since I was EDCing a Vic Spirit Plus. I've recently decided to carry the Wave at work, but just noticed something odd. If I don't grip the plier handles just so, the plier jaws don't really line up side-to-side correctly. If I'm putting even the slightest torque on the handles, only about 50% of the tips of the pliers overlap (when looking straight down at the small tips of the jaws), and I have to torque them in the other direction to get the tips lined up.

Are your new waves like this, or do I just have a sloppy version. I'm not even really sure if what I just typed made a whole lot of sense, so if further clarification is needed, let me know!

Thanks,

What you typed makes sense, but I also have a New Wave, and it has no problem with alignment, even under torque. (I just tested it.)

What you describe sounds wrong. I know many original Waves had some flexing when closed, but that didn't effect the working of the pliers. I suggest you email Leatherman with what you just wrote, at http://www.leatherman.com/customer-service/default.asp

This isn't right. They should line up perfect, with zero wiggle. I have 4 Waves, and all 4 are like bank vaults in this regard. Maybe a trip back to LM would be a good idea.

if it is new and has play in the pliers it should be sent back. under heavy use all multi tools will develop play over time. infact all af my multitools have some play in the pliers after hard use over time some more than others. yes all of them my leatherman charge, core, wave old and new, surge, pulse my vic swisstool (one of wich is the worst out of the bunch I was suprised at that one)x2 all except my SOG powerlock which I think it due to the compound leverage system. I have come to the realization that the type of pivot used the fact that it cannot be tightened will get sloppy with alot of use.

it is not just multi's that suffer form this though. my Klein linemans' pliers, diagonal cutters and needle nose have both developed play over time.

all this being said the tools are still useable for thier intended purpose you just won't be able to clip coupons from the paper with the wire cutters. :foot:
