I'd been looking for a small sub-2.5" folder that's people friendly and non-threatening and yet stout enough for real work. I liked the looks of the Al Mar SLB best, but it was more than I wanted to spend, so I ended up settling on ordering a Boker Subcom. Just I was about to put in my order, however, I came across this little guy on Amazon. I did some quick research but other than general stats (2.25" 420HC blade, 3" closed), couldn't find anything written by anyone about this knife. The shape/looks appeared to be much more like the SLB than the Subcom, and the price was right ($27 - about the same as the Subcom), so I figured it was a worth a try.
Well it came today (sorry no pics yet - the one above is just a stock photo), and I've got to say, it's a lot nicer than I was expecting. Fit/finish are very good, carbon fiber scales look great and lock-up is rock solid with no play whatsoever. I'm not a big fan of the push button liner lock release but that's more for aesthetic and ergonomic reasons than anything else as it works fine. Grip and blade ergonomics are very good as well. My only real criticisms so far are (i) the Ti Ni blade coating (anyone have any suggestions on how to remove?), and (ii) the stoutness of the knife. As to the latter, it's not that it's lacking in stoutness but rather that it may actually be too stout. For starters, it's surprisingly heavy at 3.3oz due to the top to bottom thickness of the blade and handle (as thick, if not thicker than a full sized Griptilian), CF scales and full metal liners. I don't actually have an issue with the weight in and of itself, but more with the incongruity of such a small knife weighing more than a full sized Griptilian. Overall, it looks and definitely feels a lot less diminutive than I was expecting, and may be borderline sheeple un-friendly (although I'm hoping that removing the Ti Ni coating will help).
I still want to check out the Subcom as it's shorter length (by 3/8") and less tactical look may make it more people friendly, so I'll try to track down a Subcom in person to compare the Remy to (anyone in West LA with a Subcom who wants to do some show and tell?).
