My other sword is finshed and I have sent Patrick Barta the money for it. He said that he did not want any money from me until he had completed the sword, even though I had offered to send him a down payment on it. For those of you who may not have been a part of the earlier discussion, the sword is the Roman Riding Sword form his website, http://templ.oceany.cz/eng_z_ran-stred.htm He has sent me pictures of it which I am trying to include:

And, finally, Ken Cook and I have discussed the possibility of ordering a Swiss Dagger from Lutel, also in the Czech Republic, as is Patrick Barta's Templ works. I have been looking at their No. 10005 dagger, a single edged French piece from the 13th Century that looks astonishingly like a Bowie Knife. The blade is 29cm, about 11.4", so this is a substantial knife. Their price of 4000CZK converts to about $112 plus shipping. Lutel's website is http://www.lutel.cz/index2e.htm What do any of you think of the blade? I am thinking of it more as an odd sort of Bowie to add to my collection of them than as a re-enactor's piece.

Wow  (I used this instead of the drool) That is absolutely outstanding Hugh. That is a beautiful sword and I typically don't even like migration era stuff. Is the baldric going to be used in conjunction with that?

About the knife, reports on lutel are good. You have to work pretty hard to mess up a dagger and from all reports lutel is not messing theirs up. If you guys decide to make that order, can I tag along? There is this parrying dagger that I want...

Triton, when i ordered the baldric, I weas working under the impression that the scabbard had rings, one on each side, for hanging from a belt, but Patrick has altered it to use a cabbard slide, which is much more historically accurate for the period. I have every hope that the baldric that you sent will work if I cross the narrowed sections under the slide and then use laces to wrap around the scabbard, still under the slide, and tie them off. At least, that is my hope. If it doesn't work, I'll be back to you.

And what is incredible about the sword is that All he wants from me is $250 for the sword and $40 for shipping! I do note that his price has gone up to $260 just recently, however, but a total of $300 is still very reasonable for that sword. This is, of course, assuming that it is really as nice in person as it looks in the pictures. I will let you all know when I get it. If it is, TEMPL and Patrick Barta would seem to be one of the true bargains out there.

Also, Triton, I have no idea where Ken is with his plans to order the Swiss dagger, which is either 10022 or 10023, depending upon whether you want steel or bronze fittings. He was looking for that kind of dagger that was NOT tricked out with all of the NAZI crap, since that was the pattern of the SS daggers. If I go ahead with my order, I'll let you know before I do and give you a chance to join in with me. BTW, the style of the Swiss dagger in which Ken was interested is also called the "Holbein Dagger".

I just saw a really nice one of those in the Royal Ontario museum Toronto. It really is a nice design. I'll have to post the pic tonight. Do you have the url for the Templ website again?

Oh yeah, and once you get the baldric/sword stuff together could I talk you into a picture?

Russ, Lutel's addy is http://www.lutel.cz/index2e.htm and TEMPL addy is http://templ.oceany.cz/eng_index.htm Patrick's new email is templ@host.sk He takes some time to get back on occasion, as he is quite busy. As an aside, when I was asking about him over at SwordForum, Pavel Nuemann from Armart said that Patrick had had done technical advising for them and had written the piece on pattern-welding that used to be on their web page. He recommended TEMPL.

I placed the order sometime about early September, 2001, and Patrick's initial date for completion was June of 2002. I had asked if he might try to get it done in time for MTA at Jamestown, 3/16-17/2002, and he did wondrous duty and accomplished it. I could have had it air shipped for about $100, but I was in the hospital, as you know, so I didn't find out until Wednesday, 3/13/2002. I emailed him and explained the situation and we have gone from there. I am having it surface shipped for $40.

Wow, that looks really good!
:D

Please be sure to post some better pics or at least give us a good review when you get it in hand!
