New technique (sort of)for opening my BF Native...

Okay so this is not a technique of knife opening that I would recommend to anyone AND it's the first time I have managed to perform this technique with any knife. Just before logging on to Blade Forums this evening I was getting comfortable in my chair with my feet resting up on the desk and I felt what seemed like the clip on my BF Native snagging on the chair. I reached back to my waistband of my levi's (right side) and pulled my Native out to lay it on the desk. Imagine my surprise to find the Knife fully Opened! It was the tip of the blade not the clip that was snagging on the chair! Fortunately I did not cut myself when drawing it out of my waistband! That would have been a little hard to explain to the ER staff. I did manage to damage a perfectly good pair of levi's leaving a 2 inch gash through the pocket and inner layer of the pants.(they look like someone took a vertical swipe at my backside.

Sal, have you ever heard of this happening with a Spyderco? I not sure if I've managed a Spyderco first or not.

Now you've done it! This is the exact type of post that brings out the "tip down" people in droves, screaming "I told you so." I'm going to go hunker down and try not to listen.

OK here is what you do, put your hands over your ears and chant, lalalalalalalalalalala. Than usually works for me.

Is the Native loose? What do you think happened, did you have any keys in your pocket that you took out earlier?

Mitchell.

Actually what I think happened is I put clipped the knife farther back than I normally do (I usually wear it more toward the center of my hip than the back pocket). When I was sitting in the chair with my feet up on the desk and I was slouched in the chair. The blade probably opened on the slouch due to the position it was in. This would not have been possible if it was on my hip like I usually carry it. Does anybody know if the carbon fiber neck sheaths are still available? (just kidding)

Ok here comes the tip-down droves (but I'm not saying "I told you so")....

SCAF - IMHO, I consider wasteband carry a bit risky for tip-up knifes. Seems like movement of the body against jeans and gravity have a tendency to open the blade. I have also had tip-down's open up in this mode of carry if the pivot pin was too loose. Actually maybe wasteband carry is just risky period? Wasteband carry is my preferred mode of carry and I have the ruined jeans and scars to prove it.

Though many may find the waistband method of carrying tip-up or even tip-down blades dangerous, for me waistband carry is the only acceptable method. I have never had a problem with a Spyderco opening in my waistband before this when I have placed the blade more toward the midline of my waist even through extreme activity. For me the blade opening in my pants and slicing my pocket in half is one of those more amusing moments in life that caused no injury and is worth sharing for a laugh or two. I carried my BF-Native today without any worries whatsoever. I will just be more carefull on where in my waistband I place my knife.

SCAF - I don't think that it is carry method that is the problem. I think the knife is defective and should be returned.

The Native was a "slam dunk" for Vince to build. We did in several months what we normally take more than a year to develop. (Spark had a Blade show deadline).

Self closing of a knife is a big issue. (bigger with Linerlocks). My guess is that there are some "minor tweaks" needed.

Hey Sal,

I will send in my BF Native for a check-up this week just to be on the safe side...
