New Techno blade steel: S30V

The newest batch of Spyderco Technos come with S30V steel instead of CTS-XHP. Personally, I'm disappointed and I hope this change isn't permanent - CTS-XHP is an uncommon steel and one of the major reasons I chose to buy a Techno in the first place! CTS-XHP is probably my favorite steel, it takes everything I love about D2 and makes it easier to sharpen AND more stainless. In my collection, only CPM-20CV bests it in edge-retention. I'm really bummed to see it leave one of the best-designed small folders made today.

It was just a mistake by spyderco for only one batch. It will be quite collectable in the future I imagine. and XHP edge retention is hardly better than s30v

I was looking to get a Techno later this year, with the CTS-XHP, however, that may have to be put off. I wanted something other than S30V.

My understanding is that the price will stay the same and it is only one batch and then they will revert back to ctsxhp, I beleive Spyderco even offered to switch unused knives if you prefer ctsxhp.

Thanks. Yeah, I did some more reading and figured that out. Premature posting.....its a mess, and unsatisfying to at least one person. :D

This is hardly a steel change that should be disappointing. There is little to no noticeable difference in edge retention between S30V and CTS-XHP. In fact I am actively pursuing one of these mistake Technos simply because it is different and Spyderco really does S30V right. If anyone has a lead on one shoot me a PM.

From the February 2015 Spyderco Byte released today:

"C158TIP TECHNO FOLDER FEATURES A TEMPORARY BLADE STEEL CHANGE

Have you always wanted a postage stamp printed upside down? Here’s your opportunity.

The C158TIP Techno is Spyderco / Marcin Slysz collaboration. When released, the blade steel for the model was Carpenter Steel’s CTS® XHP.

“Pobody’s Nerfect” - we goofed!

A single production run released this month has a Crucible CPM® S30V blade steel. Carpenter CTS XHP and Crucible CPM S30V are both steels produced here in the United States with the highest rating for cutting performance, edge retention and rust resistance. Once the run of “Oops Technos” are gone the model will return this autumn back to its original CTS XHP blade steel. The CPM S30V Techno is shipping now with no change in pricing from the CTS XHP version. MSRP: $319.95"

Huh! Interesting. We can always count on Spyderco to be honest and transparent. Now that I know it's a fluke I kind of want one!

These are going to be highly collectable...

I bet you'll see them in the future selling for at least twice the price of a normal Techno
