Came across this small knife and couldn't pass it up. Don't know anything about the maker as there are a few BARR knife makers. I don't even know if it's production or not, but it is pretty cool. Overall about 8", 4" blade, 4" handle.

2 handles scales for the price of one! And 2 different kinds of pin.
Did it start life with the burl scales and have the mammoth added later or vice versa?
whats with the restamping?
someone has been busy on that knife -interesting.
cheers.

Meako summed it up, but that really is a conversation piece! Should make a very capable skinner, too.

I like the knife...looks slightly like a Sharpfinger design with the upswept tip and downswept handle. Very nice.

I'd send a few photos of it to Craig Barr at Deer Mountain Forge and as him if it may be one of his earlier knives. Is the blade hardened? I'm guessing it could have been a sample piece to showcase different handle options. Looks like a capable skinner design.

Perhaps the miss on the stamp happened before the handle was added, so the maker just used scraps rather than matching scales.

I love a chisel grind, just wish it was on the other side. Cool find. I'd have bought it too.

Neat find! The non-wood scale looks like mammoth, but could be antler of some kind too:confused: Either way it is a unique piece.

I contacted Craig Barr and he doesn't recall the knife nor has he just put BARR on a blade. By looking at the blade it looks forged to me and not stock removal due to the horizontal grain. Am I right or wrong?

The only other maker that I'm aware of with that last name is AT Barr. He has made a few fixed blades, but he usually does folders. If it's not his, then I'm out of suggestions.

I honestly think it's more of a display piece, more to show off capabilities in design than for use, but I may be wrong.

An early Barr Quarton, perhaps? He stamps his tools and knives "BARR," but now with an updated (bear) logo.

(Google Barr Specialty Tools to find contact info.)

Checked with A T BARR and it's not his either. I'm reluctant to use it because it's in perfect shape but who knows.

That one scale is mammoth. A good piece too. Matching scales like that would probably set you back $300.
