I've been carrying around a wenger serrated highlander for years and i got a little bday money so i went and picked up a tinker.

i am amazed at just how much nicer it seems. the bottle opener/screwdriver has a stop at the 90 degree mark

the 2nd blade seems far more useful to me than the nail file
and finally it just seems to be better (better springs)

i am just geeking out a little
kinda bummed i couldnt find the small tinker, but whats an extra 1/4 inch anyays hehe

what do you call a small tinker please?? I have some tinkers that I use and I have never heard of a different size tinker.

The tinker is a handy model:thumbup:
I've never been a fan of the the nail file that wegner does.
cheers
mitch

I got several small tinker.its in my pocket right now as EDC knife.i much prefer it than the standard tinker. That 6mm difference matters for me since its more pocket friendly.. Dont get me wrong, the standard tinker is beautiful, but the small tinker is just comfy and better for me. Thank God SAKs are affordable,so we can have several of those without breaking the bank hehe.

yeah if i had a choice, i would have picked up the 84mm small tinker
but alas the choice wasnt available. I could have ordered online, but i am not the most patient of men ;)

what i really wanted was the 2nd blade instead of the nailfile and the non-serrated large blade. So i am happy about that. It wasnt until i had actually purchased that i realized what everyone had been saying about fit and finish of the victorinox being higher than the wengers (i now believe it)

In addition, I am a big guy with relatively big hands, while the 84mm wasnt too small, the 91mm does fit the hands a little better :P

as for saks being reasonable in cost...heh well the wife tells me i have enough knives hehe. But i DO have my eye open for either an alox farmer or pioneer for next hehe

if you got big hands, the 91mm would be a better choice....

i encourage you to get an alox soldier, pioneer or farmer... and i would welcome you to SAKs addiction! hehehe...

enjoy your tinker buddy!

If you got big hands, you'll probably like the Farmer or Electrician Plus. Enjoy the Tinker. Those basic models are really great for EDC.

Edit: there must be a reason why MacGyver carried one of the basic models (Tinker, Standard or Spartan) most of the time. :-)

yup... if its good enough for macgyver, its good enough for me! hahahaha....

thats why my 1 or 2 layer saks got EDC most of thee time... for me its the weight issue.... but when i go traveling, my Craftsman (swiss champ without magnifying glass, in line philips and philips on the back tools intead of corkscrew -- and no pen or glasses screwdrive) would surely be carried.... but 98%, it will be small tinker or sportsman.

Well, after a little under a week. Not much use on the tinker yet. I will say that I am still getting used to the slightly longer handle of the regular tinker over the 84mm highlander. Its a little more noticible, but i am sure I will get used to it

Its funny though. I carried that highlander probably 4-5 years and never felt like i was under-knived....until I found this forum. Now i have tons of knives and looking at a few more (specifically the soldier/pioneer and/or farmer.

But really, except for the alox scales what does the pioneer/soldier offer that the tinker doesnt? I know the farmer has a saw, but if i am being honest with myself I have gotten along just fine without it (also keep a folding saw in the truck). It doesnt help that everytime i look at another knife the wife gets a grumpy look on her face.

I guess what i am asking is. Do i NEED another SAK? or is the tinker going to be enough...

You probably don't NEED another SAK. But I think you should expand your horizons by buying at least one alox SAK. ;)

I like the awl on the alox models a lot better than the ones shown on the Tinkers. And I certainly agree with Harayasu - since you've got big hands give the Farmer or Electrician Plus a try ..... I don't think you'll regret it. Even if you don't use the saw much, the extra thickness of the whole package provides for a nice firm grip - they feel great in the hand!

The Tinker has always been one of my favorite models. It has enough tools to take care of anything I would need to do on a regular basis, but doesn't have anything I consider a waste of space (for my needs).

The Alox knives are also a real treat. I didn't understand why folks liked them so much until I got a couple (Soldier and Pioneer), but there is something about them that I really like.

so the alox models are really that worth it?

too bad i can only find the silver alox...would love to find a blue pioneer/farmer but they seem to be out of production and impossible to find

"Are they really worth it" is a hard question to answer for someone else, since we all have different priorities and financial situations. They're worth it to me.

Another thing to consider is how much you like/use the toothpick and tweezers. The alox models don't have them. I like (need) to have them, so in addition to a Farmer I also carry a Rambler. If you want the toothpick & tweezers and you only want to carry one SAK, then skip the alox.

oh dear lord

ok so folks, convince me.
farmer vs pioneer/soldier

and anyone have any ideas where to find alox that ISNT silver...i saw a black alox pioneer on amazon once...but it didnt last long :(

soldier got my vote! choosing the core of "Swiss Army Knife", how can you go wrong from that? its good enough for swiss military from 1961 to 2008... got plenty soldier alox my self.... one of my all time favorit!

hehe i finally find a site that i can order a vic soldier
and one of the stores in my area has the wenger soldier

any differences (besides the wenger's bale [or is it bail])

I'll second the vote for the alox Soldier as your first alox SAK. Get one and see how you like it. All other alox SAK's are derived from the soldier ..... add a saw, add a keyring, swap out the can opener/screwdriver for an electricians or pruner blade, etc.
