I've lately run across some small tins, about the size of matchbox, just a bit bigger. A standard candy tin won't close with it inside, but it's interesting.

And latest, the mass mailing from AOL came in a CD sized tin. Thin, but long in the other directions. Any thoughts on using these tins?

the best source for new tins in the U.S.A. is your local craft store.
They stock all sizes of tins. My favorite is a med white tin
2in.x3.5inx5.5in the cost was <$2.50. With this size you can actually cook something and carry a decent amount of gear. It's not a pocket kit, but it will fit in a sm. pouch.<><

I recieved a bunch of those AOL tins also. I saved them, but I really don't know what I could fit in them.

1) AOL tins: With some judicious planning and a little effort these will make decent first-aid minikits (for pack, car, or briefcase), but you will have tape them shut or use ranger bands.
2)Small matchbox size tins: I pick up tins that sound like this at Wahlgreens Drug; mint tins and such. I carry one to hold a daily supply of "Splenda" non-caloric sweetener; which come in packets much like "Sweet'n'low". They could also hold a minimalist fishing kit. Also, one style holds 3 "CR123" batteries perfectly(if wrapped in plastic).

I'm thinking of other uses and keep on collecting them.

Mith.

One of those matchbook sized mint tins, a heaping tablespoonful of perlite, a patch of window screen and a container of HEET can convert your Esbit stove into a cheap alcohol burner
