I just got an information packet from the U.S. Forest Service. It is called "An Ax To Grind". It is a great information packet about axes. It shows all the different types of axes. It shows how to hang a new handle in one. And it shows how to properly sharpen one.

I have heard that Grandfors Bruks makes a great ax. I have also heard that Collins and Estwing have quality stuff as well.

OK I was hoping that some of you seasoned professionals could point me in the right direction.

I have owned, and used both a Weterlings hatchet, medium hunter, and a GB SFA.

I Liked them all, but feel the GB is better suited to what I use my axe for. The Wetterlings are thicker, whereas the GB has a thinner head shape. The GB fit and finish is much better than the Wetterling although twice the price.

Wetterlings are great axes, don't get me wrong, I just feel the GB is worth the extra money.

Good places to buy:

Did you actually get a hard copy of "An Ax To Grind"? I have a pdf of it, but given the chance, I'd rather have a decent hard copy for reading and reference.

I have a GB forest axe and a wetterlings large hunting axe, the GB is for certain worth the extra $$ but for $60 less the wetterlings will cut the same, at least for me. The GB has better finishing on the bit.

I know that there are hard copies out there, there's also a 2-part video. We're trying to get permission to reprint it but in the meantime we have a link on our forum: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=376012 so that you can download a copy for those of you who don't have a copy of it yet.

OK guys I need to clear the air just a bit so you don't think I am throwing you all a knuckle ball  YES I have a hard copy of "AN AX TO GRIND". I also have the 2 part video as well. I guess I alluded to the fact that I just got it. Well that isn't exactly the way it is. I got all of that stuff actually about 3 to 4 years ago. I am just now getting around to getting into it and reading it. I just saw part 1 of the video last night.

So I guess I have been twittling my thumbs a bit. The Forest Service told me of the Pdf files that are obtainable on their website when I called them to see if they had any new updated stuff on axes. The guy told me that they didn't.

But now I have a little time to get to learn about this and I have some ax bits and some mauls to hang new handles in so I finally got away from my knife collecting to get into another venture. I have also bought some axes at garage sales. OK that's where I am so far
