i bought two balisongs(they have not came yet) i got a black jag balisong, and a black diamond balisong. are this good choices?? i Had 50 bucks, so i got those two. is there anything i should do before i start manipulating for the first time?? what knife is better, bm 42 or the tachyon??

I don't have a Tachyon yet but I think that is the better bali. The BM42 is the best value for your dollar though, I don't think the Tachyon is worth $100 more.

Welcome to the Bali forums ... The two you picked for starters should do just fine. Jags are sturdy starters, but after a lot of playing the pins tend to get rather sloppy, and you will fall under the bali spell;) cause once you pick onw up and start spinning, tossing, and flipping, you can't stop. IMO the BM's are your best for the money, I've had a 42 for almost a yr now and other than a little tweeking of the screws I've had no problems with it. As for the Tachyon, I have to agree with Mr. Yoda. Have fun and get some bandaids, you might need them;) :D

Hello Mr. Ellipsis (what a curious name, an indication of something omitted),

Welcome to our forum.

Spend a little time on Clay's site

That's a matter of taste. Factors like the size of your hand may enter in. Both are very fine balisongs and well-made.

Tachyon is about twice as expensive. That may be a factor in your decisions too.

I have a BM42s and I couldn't be happier with it. It def worth the 100 bucks..

Welcome! What Chuck said, go Clays site. View images frame by frame. Start slow. And get a large box of band aids.

Welcome to the Forums.., you've got some great advice.., and I'm certainly either the Tachyon or one of the Benchmades would make you happy in the future...

Stick around and let us know how you are doing...:)

The Jags are a good starting knife. The Black Diamonds aren't so great in my opinion. They're incredably thin, both handle and blades. Thinnest bali I've ever seen. Put the two side-by-side, and it looks like a golf club with a baseball bat.

The Diamonds also wear, fast. I think because of how thin they are. They're also very difficult to manipulate, because of the space between the pins. You'll try to do something, but after a weeks or so worth of wear, the bali will try to do something else. Instead of turning one way, it'll just twist. It feels almost like knot in a rope, that when you tug on it, half the knot comes undone. Hard to explain, but you'll know what I'm talking about after a while.

They also start to wobbel immediately. Again, I think it's because of how little material there is around the tang. (Meaning when the knife is open but unlocked, you push one handle up, and the other down, and there will be a lot of room). The wobbel will get bad enough that it'll destroy your blade when you close it, because it'll rub on the inside of the handles.

It is however tiny and concealable. It's also got this kind of "Martial arts/Ninja" look to it.. I think it's a bit of a theme thing, like all the weapons named after "Special Forces" or whatever else they make up 'cause it sells better.

I still play with mine every once in a rare while.. but it's just an ordinary CCC.

I have ablack handled Jag (somewhere in storage I think) but my other Jag has been going strong for about a year now with only three repinnings (keep in mind that I didn't use it as much as my 42as or 43 until today). Great starting knives. As to the Diamond I personally would have passed but you could grind off the edge and point and make it into a very cheap trainer.

One thing I didn't see mentioned that you need to do before starting is get a box or two of Band-Aids and Neosposirn (gross sp?). I recommend Band-Aid brand sport strips as they are really stretchable (good for applying pressure) and are pretty good against water.

Welcome to the forum. Although I haven't gotten a tachyon yet I can say anything Benchmade will be fine.

i could kinda guess that the black diamond would suck (its only 12$) but it was cheap so i got it any way. i think benchmade needs to lower thier prices. the 42 is 150 bucks!! this is for a knife! thier folders are even more expensive. but my paintball gun costed less than 150$. but im sure it is the top notch quality. how many times im i gonna cut myself?? any advice you can give me will help.

I recently bought a 42 for a friend at $106. That's pretty good in my opinion. Especially for what you're getting in the bargain. Now as to how many times you're going to cut yourself who knows. I nicked myself about 10,000 times but serious cuts are fairly rare.
