Hello, I just picked up a 1x30 belt sander and some 600 to 1000 grit belts to mess around with some cheap kitchen and pocket knives. I've only sharpened on arkansas stones so I was looking for some advice/tips on this new system.
Thanks

Practice on cheap knives and be careful around the tip on any and every knife! Use light pressure and the belts you have should pretty much put an edge on anything with a little bit of time. U can buy a leather belt off Amazon if u want to but for some reason I feel like that burns up the edge more then anything or just refined it way to much but I gave up on mine kindve early and went to benchstones just to try to learn it the old fashion way

I bought a leather strop as well, should I add any lubricant to the belts?
I will always use my benchstones, I wanted to learn the ropes of belt sharpening, more for reprofiling and messing around [emoji106]

take your time between passes. Don't let the tip slide off the belt. I make a fairly quick pass on the belt only one or two per side then switch to the other side. You don't need to get a big burr. I do like my leather belt for mine. The last set of knives I did went like this; one pass per side 220 belt, one pass per side 600 belt, then two passes per side leather belt. I sharpen with the belt moving away from the edge, and the grinder laying down on it's back.
