Hi guys,

I recently checked out a Mini Grip at my local store and really liked it! However, I wasn't crazy about the handle/scales. I just looked through the custom pics thread, so I know custom scales are out there. I am looking for a smallish, thin, light knife for pocket carry (unclipped.) I like a "gentleman's" type knife since I wear dress slacks to work.

What do you guys think? Is the Mini Grip a good place to start with Benchmade? I think I prefer the modifies drop point to the sheepfoot or Ritter blade shape. Does anyone have a source for scales?

The mini Griptilian is a good one, and highly regarded.

You can order a customized Griptilian or mini Grip from the Benchmade website, though they are spendy. Link. I like both the sheepsfoot and drop point blade styles (but not really the tanto), and prefer the Spydie hole instead of the thumb studs. But to each his own.

The Mini Grip is definitely a great place to start with Benchmade.

As an alternative, if you like the Mini Grip, you should check out the Benchmade 707 Sequel. Very similar drop point blade, great Axis lock, and basically the same size. However, it's a "classier" with much nicer feeling aluminum scales. It's much thinner than a Mini Grip with Wilkins grips, and hence a little more dress slacks-friendly.

For custom scales you can have Keyman or Deathofallthings make some for you. I believe they are both members here. Than there are Wilkinsgrips and Cuscadi out of Germany.

Another vote for the Sequel. As B&F said, it's essentially a slimmed-down version of the Mini-Grip. I'd purchase one myself if GPKnives wasn't selling Mini-Grips in M4 steel. That's not to say that there's anything wrong with 154CM, however.

Flint Hills, I can't comment on the custom scales, but I just received my first Benchmade-a mini grip yesterday and am quit pleased with the knife. fit and finish are outstanding and hair popping sharp. It is a tad bit thicker than my small sabenza but nothing that would make me have a negative comment. Very smooth openning. I'm actually planning on another mini. Here's a size comparison too the small sabenza.Knives 3-31-13 001.jpgKnives 3-31-13 002.jpg

Thanks everyone! I might keep my eye out for a used sequel or mini grip until that M4 one comes out! I put my email on their notify list, is there a way to pre-order from GP?

I think one of these Benchmades will go well with my Spyderco Techno and the Chaparral that I have on the way.
