Hey guys I've been wanting to invest in a benchmade for a long time and now that it's the holidays that time has come. I need a little help. I'm looking for a benchmade manual axis lock knife. 200 dollars and below. It will be my main knife for a long time so I will be using it and abusing it hard so I need a strong lockup and I very sturdy knife good for hard use. I have been looking at the 950 rift and the Presidio mainly. Between the two what would be good for hard use EDC and be very strong and meet my criteria. I'm not looking for a dedicated tactical knife but if it could be used defensively that would be a plus. Please help me decide and if you have another knife to recommend please do so (just make sure it fits my criteria)

The Axis lock is very solid, and very easy to use... I've owned a Presidio, and it was a great knife.
When I think heavy use/abuse, I think of the Adamas. When you say abuse, what exactly are you talking about ?

When I say abuse I mean using the knife for stuff that's not your typical EDC stuff. I'll take it out in the woods frequently take it to cut up some fish while fishing use it to carve wood and other stuff. The adamas is a little on the heavy side weighing around 8 ounces

The 710 is too long and skinny for my taste. It seems nice it's just not my style. Maybe it will grow on me the more I look at it

If you are tossing between the Rift and Presidio, go for the Presidio. You will get hot spots in your hands with pro-longed use of the Rift. However, the Presidio is heavy for its size.

Some of the members recommended the 710 which is a good choice as it is light and good for many tasks.

Personally my favourite is 940. It just depends on your usage. I like it because it's a great EDC and will hide away in the pocket.

950 Rift
275 Adamas
808 Loco
810 Contego, either the CPM-M4 or KW Exclusive M390 version.

These knives are about as tough as they get.

All the knives mentioned are good quality. 710 would be my suggestion.

The blade profile is more traditional, which has been honed (no pun) by years of trial and experimentation. A simple

People that see you with a knife think either "boy scout" or "psycho"

I know it's secondary on your list but carrying a knife for "tactical" usefulness puts you in the "psycho" category. I'm not anti-firearm, but listing "self-defence" as a reason for carrying a knife (or pistol) sounds like either...
A) You're paranoid delusional case, that actually thinks random strangers are coming for you, or...
B) You've been a complete dick to multitudes. Who are coming to seek revenge, and you should be afraid for your safety. Or...
C) Mall Ninja that thinks Al Queda views Mayberry and NYC as equal targets.
D) A member of some left wing anti-knife group trying to infiltrate and destroy from within.
Sorry, but situational awareness is worth more than any weapon. The weapon is for saving your ass when you weren't paying attention. And knife is at "up close and personal/ lethal" end of the spectrum. A good stout walking stick sweeps a much better swath, and if your HAVE to kill, you'll have the knife.

So much of what you said here is way off base, and deserves comment..I will however refrain and restrain myself.

I consider the 710 is too flimsy for hard use/abuse. If used that way, be very careful with it.
I suggest
1) 810 Contego (I have 2) No question you can beat on the cpm m4 blade. Build is beefy.
2) 808 Loco (don't own one) The s30v blade (I have one) is questionable for being beat on. Possibly the beefiest benchmade build.
3) 375 Adamas same as the loco except for different blade steel. d2 might or might not be tougher (don't know), but s30v holds its edge better (do know). Same beefy build as Loco?.

I also recommend the 710. It may appear to be "too long and skinny" but it's actually close to perfect for carry and work. I also thought the 710 was too much knife until I tried one...changed my mind within seconds. I bought two of them. Most knives these days have too wide a profile and take up too much room in the pocket. Until you've carried one of the wider knives for a while, you don't realize how inconvenient they can become. That, of course, may vary from person to person.

If you really want a wider, shorter model the Presidio is a good choice. I like the economy Presidio Ultra's plastic grip better than the more expensive aluminum grip model. Same size, same design, just different materials. But I don't carry it often because, again, it has a wider profile and a thicker, more contoured grip that takes up lots of pocket real estate.
