New to Busse, need advise from pros

Hey guys, and maybe a gal or two. I need some "sage" advise. I am a Busse virgin. Heck, I have not even seen one in real life, I have just read ramblings of people intoxicated with their love of these knifes, and some really convincing reviews. I called Busse the other day to ask a couple of questions, and Jerry got on the phone- well now I am really hooked. He spent 20 minutes talking about the company. He did admit that the y'all probably know more about his knives then he does, and he advised me to post, so here goes...

I am looking for a good all around knife (aren't we all). I will not go down the "if you only had one knife..." road. I know that is unreasonable request, as knifes have many different purposes. I carry a Benchmade folder for the light work, but I need a work horse. I am looking for a good camp knife- for general camping with the Scouts, and backpacking with the guys. Something that will chop some wood (no I do not expect it to fell 12" tree), split some kindling, pound a stake (handle end of course), cut rope, clean fish, and maybe even flip a pancake. In other words "a camp knife".

I see the Satin Jack is available now. My question is, would you buy this to fill the above needs? Or would you wait for something with a longer than 6" blade? I really like Swamp Rat's size of the Camp Tramp- 7 1/2". Have any of you compared to 2 products, is the Busse that much better? I am willing to pay the extra for Busse, if it is worth it, since I only plan on buying one for a lifetime. (yeah right, when I get out of Grad. school, I am sure I will be as sick and addicted as all of you after I get the first one- but money limits me to one good knife now). Thanks a million, sorry so long, but I want you to know where I am coming from.-

The convex ground SJ will be pretty good for most of what you want. However, I'm going to suggest that you look for a NO, which would be probably be better for splitting wood. But as for cleaning fish..... I'd recommend carring something a little thinner with. These aren't for fileting.

I agree with Walking Man here...... the NO has served me well over the past three years..... blade length is about the same as the Satin Jack but has a broader blade.......... chops well, and has plenty of weight to pound stakes. I have used it to clean some fish, but as the Man said....... not the best for fillets! Between my NO and a good folder, I haven't found a task that couldn't be done. But if your looking for a knife in the 7 inch range...... the Steel heart will fill that slot nicely. Good luck and choose wisely....... bigger knife=more weight...
more weight=cussing on the trail!

sounds like your lookin' for a spec forces handled natural outlaw.

I'd go with a Steel Heart, It won't clean fish very well unless it is a salmon, but you can use your Benchmade folder for that. The Steel Heart will do 80% of the other chores with ease. Even though I have three Satin Jacks, it just seems to be a in between knife to me, too small for the big chores, but too big for the small stuff, just my opinion.

Another vote for the SFNO, unless your prepared to carry the slightly bigger Steel Heart.

I've ordered a Satin Jack, but I view it as more of a fighter than a camp knife.

Mayfly-1970,

Welcome to the Busse forum!! You are now in the hands of professionals!!! :D

I enjoyed our conversation the other day and am very glad to see you here. . . Now all you have to do is buckle your seatbelt and hang on!!!!

Good thing I wear a cape  ;) :D

You only wear a cape because it goes with your tights and you figure folks are already looking at you funny, so why not go for the whole deal. :D

Mayfly, all the above suggestions are good. For my money I would go with a Steel Heart in any configuration (Fusion models might be popping up soon at the company store!!!) and pair it with a folder (a Rat Trap for instance :))for the finer work of fish cleaning. If you happen across a SF Natural Outlaw, it would also be an excellent choice. It will not have the same heft as the SH, but a little lighter blade might be what you need.

Welcome to the addiction and stick around.

Like they say, imitation is the best form of flattery... And I look up to you Porkgunner ;) :p :D

I would say the steel heart would serve you well. As for filleting, depends on if you want salmon steaks, fillets or cannery cuts

Mayfly, I picked up a Busse EU17 to fill the needs that you listed - good all around camp knife. It is a little heavier than knives I've carried in the past but this along with the specialized handle make it a great chopper. It is under my 7.5" blade size limit for backpacking but the handle, with the extended reach (great for flipping tactical burgers) capability makes it feel like a much bigger knife (you can also choke up on the blade). Unfortunately, this knife was a military overrun (not many available) but there is a Terror Monkey N.O.(another mil. overrun) which has a similar handle on ebay - or maybe we can petition Jerry to bring back the "extended reach" handle in future models

I don't wear a cape, it is more of a hooded cloak. Sheesh.

Just my opinion, but definitely the SFNO..:D

Ian

That is the hairest Salmon I've EVER seen! LOL

I'd say the NO also. Either the older NO-E (6" blade) or the SFNO which is 7" (?). I don't have a SFNO, but IIRC it is an inch longer than it's predecessor. Corrections will follow from those who know. Or, even the ZTNO, to be even slicier.

Nice wide blade, more woods friendly than the SJ. IMHO
