new to collecting/should I buy this?

I don't see any definite signs of offgassing but I'm looking at it on my phone. Depending on the price even if it is it might be worth it to see what that looks like as you get started. Just don't store it with any other knives :)

I like the looks of the congress pattern. Would like to see more before I placed a bid.

The colour of the cell has darkened near the butt and along the spring edges, the colour overall has changed. I have found that to indicate the early stages of breakdown. Also, cell gassing only affects carbon steel. There is also a hint of darkening of the blade above the slot.

Best regards

Experience wins out, I haven't seen many examples, all worse then this. I've been told it can effect brass, if not the stainless steel, of other knives?

I've seen it darken bolsters right beside the scales, making NS look like tarnished brass. I have found that usually the blade turns grey right outside the pocket even before the cell shows signs of rotting. If left it will rot away the carbon blade. Quite nasty. :D Thank god for gec and their amazing acrylics.

Hard to tell from the picture, but it sorta looks like the blade has a tip exposed. Could be a shadow.

I like the pearl celluloid senator, it closely matches a Bruckmann I have, but there appear to be dents in the blade plus whatever that dark spot is.

I don't buy used knives. ;)

Anything look good in this lot? Not to sell but to start my collection.

Bottom left looks like a Boker Congress that I have.

Mine is in a rather worn state, but the blades take and hold a wicked edge, if I ever came across one in better shape, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat...

New to the forums. my knife collecting to date has been Jack's that I carry everyday and hunting knives. I would like to start collecting vintage stuff. I saw this knife which I think is called a toothpick. Its a Remington. Should I buy it?

I'd pass on that one.

Hard to say without seeing the blades but the Imperial Boy's Knife (top black & silver with bail) looks like a nice one. I have a soft spot for those all metal boy's knives and usually buy them if they're in very good condition.

How old of knives are you looking for? There are a couple nice looking, at least to me, Case Texas Jacks in the exchange from the 70's. Price seems reasonable to me but I also like that pattern.

In your second picture I like the barlow but would examine a couple of the others too. Doesn't mean they're worth anything or even special but they caught my eye.

The pic is from an estate sale I'm going to tomorrow. I will take a good look at them then. I may have to buy them all if they sell them together

Just decide what you think they're worth (to you) before the bidding starts so you know when to get out.
