Hi I’ve just got into the appreciation of knives and want to remain within the law in the uk. I’m wondering can a knife with a lock mechanism be converted to being a slip joint without too much of the knife being changed . Apologies if this is a newbie question the knife im considering is the small WE thug which is below 3 inches blade length but is a locking blade thankyou

Welcome to bladeforums. Sorry, that's a frame lock, which is integral to the design.

Correction. The smaller version has a liner lock, also integral. Without it, there would be no detent in either the open or closed positions.

Spyderco UKPK is a great slip joint designed for UK knife laws. It has great ergonomics and the index finger acts as a safe guard to the blade closing. Essentially creates a “lock” but doesn’t break any laws.
Also made in USA for around $100 USD. I don’t have restrictions where I live and it’s still one of my favorites
