Hi everyone. I just recently became interested in mid to high end knives, so, I jumped in with both feet and purchased several. I managed to score a couple of Benchmades (Benchmade 553 and 350) for a decent price and two Ontario Rats (1 and 3). Looking through all of the many varieties of knives, I picked up a 950 Osborne as well. I hope to expand my collection to include Spyderco, Microtech, Zero Tolerance, and many others. Suggestions are welcome as far as Custom makers or production models.
Thanks.

P.S. I hope to eventually begin improving and expanding my collection through the Exchange also.

I'd suggest that you avoid Microtech. They used to be a good company, but now their quality isn't good, their customer service will ignore you when your knife stops working, and they make knockoffs instead of coming up with their own designs. If you look at all the positive reviews for Microtechs here, they're all from WAYYYY back before they became a crappy knife company. Now you mostly just hear about them breaking and Microtech not fixing them.

I'll only speak for the brands that I own...Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw, LionSteel, Spartan and Hinderer. All of which are fantastic companies with equally fantastic products.

Thanks for the response. I heard something in a review about looking the Microtech knives over very well and something similar to what you mentioned about their older knives.

Dont forget the good old Bussekin trio. Busse, Swamprat, and Scrapyard. All tough as nails knives and the nest warranty around. Spyderco, Kershaw, Esee. Jason Howards and Jake Hoback are two custom makers I like alot.

I have been collecting for a few years and have really grown to like Kershaw. I would highly recommend you pick up some of those. Great products and outstanding customer service. I would also say to avoid Microtech for the reasons previously stated. If you want a high-end or mid tech knife, I really like my Strider. Of course, the Sebenza as well is something you should try once but the SnG is the only knife to kick the Sebenza out of my pocket. Try some knives with different locks, sizes, steels, handle material etc, and decide what sort of knife you like. Welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the suggestions. I've already found a few knives from Spartan, Lionsteel, and Hinderer that I like.

I would have ordered an Esee if I hadn't already picked up the Rat-3. I'll most likely pick up an RC-4 and I've been lusting after a Busse for a while now.
Thanks

Strider was already mentioned so I would also recommend checking out both Emerson & ProTech knives. Welcome to the sickness!

You need a manix 2 and a 710.

Seriously, just do it...

ETA: don't go all the way to the top yet with Busse, Strider and the like; work your way up the totem pole with the spydercos, benchmades and esee first then go to the real nice stuff and customs once you've bought and used some "lower end" stuff (to us). Find out what you like before you drop 400$ on a sebenza with a grind and steel that you don't real enjoy after you've learned more.

It was between the 710 and the 950. The 950 won out in this round. I'll definitely be adding a 710 to the collection in the near future. The Manix looks like a good place to start with Spyderco.
Thanks

1. Get a paid membership here and familiarise yourself with the exchange forum. Eventually you will get tired of having knives strewn about the house.

2. Spyderco Military.

3. Have fun

heres a few tips. if you want to ignore them, fine. jsut pay attention to numero uno.

1: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. do not purchase anything from "Allen blade", "Steve corkum", or "Jack crain". and avoid "Liu kang" like the plague.

2: Dont believe everything you hear. just because a knife is made over seas doesent automaticly make it junk. (the spyderco sage series for example)

3: ALWAYS check feedback before doing a trade, or business transaction here on bladeforums. do not use "GIFT" or "Personall payment options" with paypal.

4: its never a bad idea to buy from forum knife makers. but if your having a knife made, never put down a deposit of more then 5%-10% unless youve previously done business with them.

5: buy a membership. it helps support bladeforums.

6: avoid "Liu kang" like the plague.

Edit: AVOID LIU KANG AT ALL TIMES. LIU KANG IS NOT TO BE INGESTED WHOLE. DO NOT TAKE LIU KANG IF YOU ARE PREGENANT, REASONABLE, OR BREATHING... IF YOU HAVE THE SUDDEN URGE TO GIVE LIU KANG YOUR MONEY, IMMEDIATLY CONTACT YOUR LOCAL BLADEFORUMS/JERZEEDEVIL/KNIFEFORUMS/MADDOG/BRITTISHBLADES MEMBER.

that is all.

I had to look up Lui Kang just to see what you were referring to. Thanks for the info. I may drop the cash for a membership soon.

Good luck and have fun in building up your collection. Getting a paid membership helps out because you can buy knives you aren't sure of keeping and just get a feel for them in hand and then sell/ trade on the Exchange if they aren't keepers, for you. Deals also spring up now and then on the Exchange.

Check out Chris Reeve Knives.
