What might be the one smaller custom tactical folder that might be a first choice? I'm guessing that it would be the Darrel Ralph Mini Maxx. Good guess?

Or the Apogee, or the EDC, or any of a number of others. I don't believe you can do better than Darrel.

You could, however, consider any number of other makers, who also make fine, custom knives.

I'm a flipper lover, so would have to say you're making a good start! Enjoy whichever knife you choose! I just ordered my first custom, and now understand what it feels like to feel you have to order one.

A Carson model 4 is another nice choice. A good solid working knife that would serve you well. There are so many good choices out there that deciding on just one can be a tough call. Do yourself a favor and get two

From another post comes the same answer...My advice would be Kit Carson's small Model 4 or Tom Mayo's TNT. The Apogee or the EDC are also excellent choices. You won't be disappointed in any of these.

You can't go wrong with a knife from Darrel, or Kit, or Tom or one of a few dozen other great makers on this forum. A.T. Barr, Andrew McLurkin, Brad Duncan, Tom Anderson, Allen Elishewitz and the Jones Brothers are just a few of the great names in knife making that you have to choose from right here on Bladeforums.

I hope this does not open up a pandora's box and make choosing harder for you. If you go for a knife from Darrel you will love it. I love my Madd Maxx. It is a great knife.

How'd you know that Pandora's Box was open. I've checked out several and most are very, very nice. Thanks for all of the responses.
I think that I'll check'em out at the New York Show in November. In the mean time I'll do most of the middle of the night baby (9 weeks old) feedings so that my wife will go easy on me if she finds out how much I've spent.

i second the flipper-type knives and you will be hard pressed to find a better one that is as smooth or solid as phil b's cobra..somewhere on here someone else posted about it..not a speedsafe like an onion but smoother and less blade play and the blade design is beautiful..

The mayo TNT is a great one. I bought mine without ever personally examining one (a huge step for me) and have been delighted. I did this based on the praise it elicited on this forum and Knifeforums. I have played with Kit Carson and DDR knives and they are supurb as well. The best thing is to try to find one of each and decide which one you like best. Short of that, pick one you like the looks of, you will not be dissapointed.

What Bandaidman said. When you are dealing with all the knives mentioned the quality is there on all of them. Each has their own unique feel. If you are choosing blind (without handling) asthetics come into play and we all have differnt tastes.

Maybe an impossible question, but what would you choose between a:
Dale Reif Matrix
Dale Reif Atrox
Darrel Ralph Mini Maxx or a
Tom Mayo TNT?
I hope to one day know what I'm doing.
