New to EDC/SD Fixed Blades

I'm completely new to the world of tactical knives and plan on getting some tactical knife training in the very near future. I live in downtown Indianapolis so I carry a Kahr 9mm everyday but can't carry to work and school and feel pretty naked when I don't have my gun. A fixed tactical blade seems to be the best option for last ditch defense in my situation but I'm a bit in the dark when it comes to what knife to buy. I have a price range of no more than $80 for a knife/sheath combo. I have been very intrigued by Cold Steel Safe Maker I, Mini Tac Tanto, Pro Guard, Double Agent Drop Point, and the KA-BAR Large TDI Tanto. All seem to fit into the IWB role that I would like to use and all are affordable. I want a blade length of around 4" with a short/concealable handle that still provides good retention. What are some suggestions either within the knives I'm interested in or knives that fit my parameters?

It depends on so many factors but you seem to have some good blades in mind already. I guess the question is "neck knife" or "boot" You will need to practice how you plan on drawing the weapon often though as you surely don't want to fumble about if/when the time comes.

Singularity35, do you have any suggestions about training styles? I know there are several styles.

BamaJoe, I'm thinking IWB belt carry so handle length is a factor. It seems like neck knives are more designed for IWB carry than boot knives which have longer handles.

Hhmmm, it would probably be more practical to scout out what training is available near you and select the one that is "closest" to reality. Sparring, force on force, and some other reality based style would be good. I do train in FMA these days but I've dabbled in other martial arts before but I've only gotten weapon training from eskrima and arnis. I'd really suggest a school that espouses serious sparring because any other kind of training is basically two step dancing.

I agree with singularity. But right off the bat I will tell you that the ka -bar tdi makes a great self defense knife. But again. Thats takes different training than a straight fixed blade

I also train eskrima so another vote. You'll love it.

With stick to blade to empty hand transitions it's very practical for the streets.

There's also Martial Blade Concept and AMOK

Agree on fighting style for knife choice. Personally once you develop a style I would recommend going to knife shop handling some knives to get a feel for your self what works for you.

Even with training different people have different tastes.

Yes, this.^^

Ordered the Cold Steel Safe Maker II today. The push dagger just makes a ton of sense to me as a backup to my Kahr 9mm. The fighting motions are nearly identical to standard boxing (minus slashing motions of course) and the power that you can generate from keeping a straight wrist and slashing/stabbing is an asset as well. Overall length of the push daggers is very attractive as well! Can't wait to get it and start carrying IWB with that awesome Secure-Ex sheath!

good choice. One other advantage of push daggers, they nearly impossible to disarm
