hello - name is Eric - i was an Iron worker and industrial mechanic for 20 plus years. i prefer fixed blade knives - always had one on my side at work - liked to keep my pockets empty. Tried a few mid priced ones with the clip but i always ended up breaking the clip off (snagged on machinery etc etc ).

the only folders i have are a hawk-bill with a marlin spike and my grandfathers old timer.

I am disabled now and money is tight - but still try to keep busy.

i use knives for chores around the house and work - i keep them clean and working well --but I dont like keeping them polished and pretty

so i have been researching all around the internet and the forum - reading a lot of opinions and specs etc etc .

So i have decided i want to buy good folder of course i read a lot of different things about Emerson being the best - but I read that about others too.

So now that i decided to get an Emerson i have a couple questions.

i like the Commander BT

i like the CQC-8 w/ "wave shaped feature" - but i dont know what exactly wave shaped feature means?

i hope i am not asking to many questions but i figured this would be the place to ask

any suggestions for other models?

- thanks for your time - Eric

Evening Eric,

Hope you are well. I'm a fan of the Emerson line and now prefer them to a couple other brands I own.

This is why I prefer an Emerson:

1. They're all now made in the USA
2. The current production all offer the Walker Liner lock
3. Wave feature on most models

Commander Wave Feature

4. Relative easy to take apart to clean if needed without voiding the warranty (very good customer service in this regard)

I like the the opening and closing design of their knives. Via the thumb stud or wave feature I can easily open the knife with one hand. Very quickly if the knife has the wave feature. With the liner lock, the knife can be closed with one hand.

One challenge you will find is actually finding the production knife you want. The production knives are very popular and don't stay in stock for long.

They're a bit pricey compared to other makers.

I mostly hang out over on the USN forum and just happened by here tonight for a quick look.

You mentioned you're interested in the Commander. I'd also look at the CQC-15. It has the recurve blade of the Commander plus the Tanto point of the CQC-7.

I have the mini 15 with the satin finish and serrated blade. I really like it for EDC. I do have a few other Emerson's and have recently acquired one of his customs.

I am new the Emerson 'bug' as well but have gleaned a ton of info via various forums and of course Emerson's website , prior to purchase.

The Wave is a feature that allows you to snag it on your pocket upon drawing your blade ( if you choose to do so ) thus opening the knife much like an auto. There are videos on Youtube showing this feature in effect.

There are Wave-less models you can choose should you decide the Wave is not for you.

I read somewhere that Emerson knives are "more tool than knife" and could not agree more , and that is not a putdown by any means. A knife is a tool , or should be IMO.

Stock Emersons are not the prettiest knives in the world , there may be grind lines on your titanium liner and fit and finish isnt all that, Emersons have a breaking in period , they can be rough and gritty at first - this is info I have read from others.

MY first hand experience on my CQC7BW is , fit and finish were not pretty , but nothing that cant be fixed. Breaking in period is over and my new knife functions perfectly.
The blade grinds are flawless , the blade centering is perfect. The price was not cheap but then I prefer to decipher value over price. My knife , the price I paid for it , is worth every penny.
I know that my knife is not a safe queen , or a drawer model to take out when guests arrive for viewing pleasure. I know that when I need my knife it is going to work , period.

I have %100 total confidence in my knife to withstand the rigors of MY daily use and would recommend Emerson without hesitation to someone looking for a reliable tool to be used.

My two cents - Tostig

I just got a CQC-8 and it's a very nice knife, 2 thumbs up for sure.

thanks to you all - i appreciate it - i know i am going to buy at least one (probably get one for my brother too) still not quite sure which but that gives me time to save up some cash

I'm new to Emerson as well and after two years of looking them over, I finally settled on the CQC 10 (plain edge model) and I'm very happy with it. That's kind-of an understatement since this is easily the best all-around blade I've ever owned. The handle is absolutely perfect. The blade shape is ideal for any utility chores and perfect for my needs. I'm still on the break-in stage since it just came in yesterday, but I can already tell that this is one that will be with me for quite a while. In short, I don't see myself going back to any other brands in the near future.
