I have been interested (heavily) in knives for the better part of a year now and i have just recently become interested in EKI.

I was initially put off by the prevellance of chisel grinds, i would like to know if this is a justifiable prejudice?

Also is the commander the only waved V-ground production knife offered?

thanks guys

The Commander is actually not V-ground, it is a hybrid between a V-grind and a Chisel grind. The knife is V-ground and the final grind, at the edge, is a Chisel.

The Chisel has alot of critics and I think most of it is simple prejudice and personal preference. You can, of course, have a personal preference as long as you don't start saying that something is not suitable for a particular task...based on prejudice...

I don't use my Emersons for Utility, so, I don't particularly have an opinion on their Utility Use. I think the Chisel might be limited in that area indeed.

But you don't need a Waved Knife to cut a box open either...they're primarily Defensive Edged Weapons in my opinion.

And flesh is something else entirely and I see no inferiority in a Chisel grind for that task at all.

I think a lot of the prejudice against chisel ground edges is that they don't feel as sharp as an equally sharp V ground blade does. They're every bit as sharp or sharper, they just don't feel as sharp when you run your thumb across it.

I use my Commander as a Utility knife and it works fine. You just have to learn how to work the edge for fine tasks.

I use my SOFCK and CQC6, both with chisel grinds, as my every day knives. They get used for utility, open boxes etc, etc.

I personally find that there is no difference between a v-grind and a chisel grind. There is a short space of time where you get used to a particular knife and then no further problems.

Regards,

Ed

I think one of the funniest criticisms of the Chisel grind is;

"It won't cut straight! The blade goes off in another direction!"

#1 Never witnessed this phenomenon on boxes I have cut with a Commander for practice. I guess it can happen, I have cut very straight with one. As straight as a Spyderco SpyderCard, Endura, Harpy...lots of others...

#2 On flesh, it can make you less than accurate? Some people have never been in a fight in their entire life. People flailing around, if you get a deliberate cut, you can cut straight enough with a Chisel grind and if it is a flailing encounter...

You just get what you get regardless of the blade being Chisel ground or not.

well, imho the chisel grind isnt BETTER for a given task, but that is what emerson uses soooo.....imho the chisel edge is harder to sharpen, for me anyway, but some say ya cant get one razor sharp, and thats wrong, ya can, just hard to do - my emerson waved commander is my favorite knife, and while i switch around on my utility knives (ie spyderco millie, starmate, crawford kasper fighter, SIFU, etc) i always carry my commander, and eagerly await the release of the super commander - the design is so good, w/the wave, that it is better than any other knife i have found, for the use i need it for , i cant reccomend one highly enough.....and this from someone who USED to think the wave was a gimmick lol....

There is a classic mistake about sharpening the chisel grind. Some people, as I first did, tried to hard and rolled it over. Go slow and easy with some good tools and everything should be just fine. I use the Spyderco Tri-Angle Ceramics, but I hold them in my hand and do it free hand...works like a charm.

Tbanks for the responses guys.

The knife that i was handleing at the store was a Specwar, i really enjoyed the handle ergonomics and didnt mind the chisel ground edge (even though i am a sucker for symmetry). But i dont want an emerson with out the wave feature.

I like the commander but my impression of it is that it doesnt have a point! I Understand that the SOCFK is simmilar to the Specwar with the edition of the wave feature.

Is this knife in the early production stages since it is not listed at most websites? and could any of you give me the Low Down on the SOCFK?

thanks again.

The SOCFK (Special Operations Command Folding Knife) is an exclusive to Extreme Outfitters. You can only buy them from EO or EKI.

Basically, if you like the Specwar, you'll love the SOCFK.

Thanks John i didnt know that the SOCFK was an exclusive, any news on how long they will be in production, is it going to be a limmited run?

How about the specs, same as the SpecWar?

From the last that I heard, there are no immediate plans to change the status of the SOCFK, that is, as far as I know, it is not scheduled to be discontinued, and it is not scheduled to be available to anyone but Extreme Outfitters.

It is a fabulous knife, a great hybrid; a handle similar to a Specwar, with a blade pretty close to a CQC7B w/wave. It feels good in the hand, and you can't beat the wave.
