I recently received and Buck 500 that belonged to my Grandfather. It is the only thing I have that was his and it is in shotty condition. The blade will not lock in and it has obviously been used in its life so to speak lol. My question is.. If I send this to Buck to get it repaired so I can actually use the knife then pass it on to my kids later in life will they fix it or send me a updated knife? This may be a very stpid question but I have never sent a knife in for repair before. Thank you all in advance for any information.

Welcome to the Buck Forum. Send it to Buck attention Joe Houser with your phone number and a note stating it has special sentimental value to you and you do not want a replacement but just cleaned up and repaired the best it can be. Let them know in your note weather it is ok to replace any parts on it if needed or not. You will get back your original knife. Take before and after pictures and post it here on the forum for all to see once you get it back with your story about the knife.

Good luck.

If the "Buck" on the blade tang is in old English script and blade isn't in horrible condition, I would ask them to keep the blade if at all possible.

DON"T PUT BUCK KNIVES AS THE ADDRESS.....

Everyone always remember to tell people to only address their kinves to : BKI, Inc. then the address then attention Joe Houser. Placing Buck on the address invites "unwanted" attention as it travels...... Unless you need to give it to someone over holidays I would wait till after the first of the year when shipping is back to normal levels and part time workers are gone.

Thank you for the welcomes. I kind of figured it would need a new blade. To me the important thing is the knife as a whole. If it has a new blade then that means I get many more years out of it. My Grandfather passed away in 1972 and my Father carried this knife until this year when he passed it on to me so as long as I can carry it I will be happy.

This is the axe my grandfather made.
My father replaced the handle,
And I replaced the blade!

If it helps, I just tell myself that some parts are made to be used up good and replaced. Bike rims wear out as do rotors in cars (same reason). Common the re-hang an axe with a new handle.

Perhaps your son or grandson will inherit the knife with a second worn out blade. That would be fitting.
