What kind of work do you want to do with the knife? Where do you live? What kind of woods do you have around you? What size hands do you have? What grips and cutting techniques do you use?
Are you going to build fire? Shelter? Cook? Dress game? Core Apples? Slice cheese? Butcher, slice, dice?
Chop? Whittle? Feather? Baton? Carve? Drill? Notch?
These questions will help you find the right knife. Most here tend to a 4 inch blade with a 4-1/2 inch handle. Then they either go to a knife with some belly for game and/or food prep, of a fine point for notching/drilling. If no food prep or slicing, then a Scandi grind might be for you. Otherwise, go with a convex grind.
Are you in a marine environment or have limited time to care for your blade? Then you should look for CPM 154 or S35VN. Most of Andy's blades are In O1 tool steel for strength, toughness and edge retention.
Do yourself a favor and spend a few hours on the Fiddleback Forge web site. Then take some time and go through the Flea market thread, which is pinned above.
Happy hunting,
