Hi, I'm thinking about purchasing my first rifle. The Nagant carbine seems right up my alley because it can be had for $50 - $100. Anyone know why they're so cheap? Can anyone name the pros and cons of this gun? Where can I acquire this rifle? Thanks for all your help:o :) .

Edit: I don't plan to use this much. Maybe just for plinking and hunting out at my dad's ranch. Thanks again!

Make sure you inspect it carefully before buying. They are old and things can go wrong with old guns(or just about anything old for that matter). I had a Romanian M44, but it has been retired due to a problem with chambering rounds.
The price seems to be going up, I see people try to sell them for crazy prices. I certainly wouldn't pay over $100 unless it was something rare, and a 1944 isn't. $50 sounds better. The ammo isn't too expensive usually, but for the most part it is surplus Russian ammo. I shot mostly Wolf out of mine. An M44 has quite a muzzle blast, and a bit of recoil(similar to a hot non-magnum 12ga IMO). They are lots of fun, and if you look around you can get replacement stocks and parts easily and there are a few scope mounts although installation requires some basic gunsmithing skill. They make great medium-caliber plinkers and are good for hunting too.
I say go for it and have fun! :)

Aim Surplus is a great place to purchase M44's. Check here. I've purchased a lot of rifles from Aim and I've yet to be disappointed. They also have great deals on the 91/30 and M1938. For $120 plus shipping you could get a great rifle and 800rds of Czech ammo!

The only con I had with mine was the recoil. The metal butt plate and fairly heavy caliber make it uncomfortable for me to shoot a lot of rounds off of a bench, not as bad as my M95 Mannlicher carbine but pretty close.

Go over to the Rifle fourm at thehighroad.org and ask. Be sure to get one of the arsenal refinished rifles if you're going to use it for a shooter. I picked up a pair of 91/30s for my brother-in-law and myself and the guns are great looking, came with bayonets, oilers, cleaning rods, ammo pouches and slings - for $150 out the door for the pair. I even requested that the serial numbers be as close together as possible and they folk got them within 1 of each other.

Ammunition is cheap and readily available. The corrosive is very cheap and is easy to clean up after (ammonia Windex on a patch).

Phillip, I just bought one from my local gun shop and love it!!
It's one of the unissued models and is in mint condition. Shoots great and everything works fine. I bought a synthetic stock for it and mounted a scout scope on it which is fantastic. The scout scope rig is perfect for hunting. You can peg a moving target super fast. Ammo is dirt cheap for them too. You can't go wrong with em if you look around and get a good one.

The guys at Mosin-Nagant.net would cry if they heard you jibbered up an unissued, mint gun like that. Just out of curiosity, which synthetic stock did you ge? Do you have a carbine or the full rifle? How much lighter is the synthetic than the dead tree stock?
