recently bought a hawk from Cheaper Than Dirt when I was ordering ammo.
What great fun. I watched a few vids on UTube, set up some old picnic benches in the back yard and started throwing. What a blast! I'm hooked!!
I already cracked the handle but a little duct tape fixed that. I plan on buying a few more hawks and extra handles.
I hope to learn a lot from this forum.
Regards,
jason

(I hope the neighbor stays out of his pool on the other side of the fence :( )

epoxy and filament (packing) tape works better than duct tape for a cracked handle until you can find some replacements.
post a pic of the hawk and I'm sure someone here will be able to tell you where to find replacements. (like crazy crow trading post)

Welcome to hawk throwing!

You should think about picking up a couple cold steel hawks, they'll hold up better than hawks from cheaper than dirt and they're probably around the same price.

Thanks for the welcome and advice! I just ordered a couple of CS's and doing the quick fix on the handle. Now I'll just step back and learn from you guys.
Best regards,
jason

Jason, welcome!! It looks as though you are off to a good start. Check out the hawks from Steve at Coal Creek Forge and Keith at Great River Forge. Both are members here and make some great hawks. I have one from each of them and really like em. My Hammer Pole hawk from Coal Creek Forge is going backpacking with me this weekend.

I might suggest that if you want to spend a lot of time throwing hawks you might want to consider not using your better made hawk like CCF. Rather save the good hawks for real work and not subject it too the wear and tear that throwing will subject it too. I used the 35 dollar rifleman hawks from Cold Steel, got about eight of them that I throw one after another .....sort of helps me get the rhythm without having to stop, go pull the one out of the target , then walk back. You'll probably find, as I did that you will beat the hell out of a lot of handles before you really get consistant with this. I know there are hawks made by some fine people today that will hold up to this but it's matter of economics, I guess. Your call everyone has to find their own way.

Well Steve's hawks use handles from Crazycrow.com I think, so buying replacement handles is a cinch. But if he's worried about throwing his hawks over the fence into the neighbor's yard, I kind of doubt he'll be using his hawks for "real work", not many forests in the suburbs.

Badjuju, I'd say you should go watch Avery's videos youtube(beastofburdeninc.) He'll tell you all about pacing, handle length and consistency.

Hey guys, thanks for all the great advise! I received my CS hawks yesterday.
Much better than the CTD hawk but it was good for starters anyway.
Avery's vids were very helpful and he's left handed too. Kenny is right..... not much to hack down here in suburbia:o
Oh! so far so good, haven't had any fly over the fence and have stayed pretty much within my target range. (not exactly my favorite neighbor but I'd hate to send him back to Peru with a hawk in his head  )
Thanks again,
jason

I'm glad you found my vids helpful, always appreciated. C.S. hawks are decent beaters; but as far as great hawks for a good price, I'm an Allan foundry man myself.

Kenny H. :

I was just trying to help. Sorry to interupt.
Dwight good advice. I dont think there was any interuption here all opinions are welcome. Like you I like to have a handfull of hawks so I dont have to walk back and forth so much.

Kenny: None taken, thanks for the consideration.

When I operated the school in Yorktown and lived in Poquoson, I had a target similar to that in the photo and I propped it up against the fence too. It was made out of three 2x12s and I used a human shilowette instead of the circle. Out here in Surry, I had a dead tree cut down to about 5 feet from the ground and that serves as the target these days.

Best
Dwight
