Want to use this as a all purpose hiking/wood gathering/yard tool, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

Greetings Enzy-Trying to cover all the bases with one blade seems to be the age old quest.Much depends upon how strong and fit you are, what will the blade be used for the majority of the time(cutting light brush, heavier firewood, etc.)Personally, I can handle and carry a khuk from 16.5 inches to 22 inches, and from 1.5 to 3 pounds, although at the larger end of that scale it is going to slow me down, and rigging for carry needs to be looked at because you don't really want a 3 pound blade strapped to your belt. For cutting firewood and building shelters stick with a stout spined blade-chirawa ang khola, ganga ram special,m-43,bonecutter,AK bowie, etc.Any of these will knock down wood cutting chores well.On the martial arts and self defense end,the lighter, faster blades are the ticket-sirupati,gelbu,chitlangi.Their is of course overlap in type and intended use,so compromise(something in the middle)can serve multiple puroses.Good luck to you!

Mike, how did I know that you were going to say that? ;)

Enzymez, welcome to Bladeforums and HI. A 16.5" or 18" WWII style or M-43 are probably your best bets for an All-around Khukri.

I have an 18" WWII and 16.5" CAK and both are great all around knives. I tend to use my WWII more cause it's a tad heavier and longer plus my CAK has a full polished blade while my WWII has a villager finish so I'm not as picky about it getting scratched up. In the end though both are great knives and both will serve you well as an all purpose knife.

Three words: World War Two! (16.5"). It was Uncle Bill's favorite for a reason. It is delightfully packable and useful. Mine are about 25ish oz., but a few DOTD WWIIs have come in around 20 oz. That would be an OUTSTANDING general use khuk. After that you need to get an M-43, a CAK, a Bonecutter.......:)
