New to Hinderer knives and have a few questions

So I just purchased my first XM-18 from another member on the forum, and I must say, I love it. It has been used, there are a few marks and scratches (nothing major) on it and the anodize titanium is a little faded. But I think it gives the knife great character, and besides I wont be afraid to use it and put the "First blemish" on an otherwise perfect knife. When I first picked it up, I could feel the quality and superior ergonomics. I felt like, this is the knife I have been looking for since I started my journey with this hobby. I may be ready to send some of my other knives down the road to make room for another.

I did have a few questions I was hoping those in the know could answer for me. Here are my questions:

1. There is a tiny screw on the lock bar side of the knife. It can be seen in the picture below, just under the pocket clip insert. it goes about half way through the knife and does not meet the titanium on the other side and I am just not really sure why this screw is there and what its for.

2. I have a sterile blade (no hinderer logo), just CTS-XHP kind of etched in the blade. I have noticed a lot of other XM-18s out there that do not have the hinderer logo on the blade as well. I was just wondering if this meant that the blade was replaced, or refinished, or if knives made in certain years may have came that way.

3. How can I tell the approx. age of my XM-18 (What gen. knife)?

4. What is the deal with the steel types used to make the blades? So far I have seen them in XHP, S35VN and 20CV. I was wondering if all of these steels are still currently used in production or if certain years, steel types were limited runs, or if they changed over time and you steel is an indicator of when your knife was made. I was also wondering if there are other steel types, other than these 3 that are used in the XM-18 that I may not be aware of.

Thanks in advance for any info you guys can provide as I continue to grow as a Hinderer enthusiast.

Not an expert in Hinderer, but I believe the pin you are talking about is the closed position blade stop pin. That pin was removed in 4th gen XM-18's and was replaced with a floating captured pin. Leads me to believe in my non-expert opinion, that you have a gen 3.

As for the blade steel, I believe that Hinderer is like Microtech. They do runs of their knives in different steels depending on what is available. Can't say why some are sterile and some aren't, could just be different each year.

I don't know the answers, But I will say it sure looks awesome! Nice starter Hinderer! Congrats! I would be proud to own that one too.

It's most often more rewarding to learn on your own, at least that's this guy's opinion.

RDA did us all a favor of sorts compiling all that info in a sticky. It resides in the stickies for good reason.

Enjoy your XM.

I'm happy for you, and pity you all at once.

Enjoy you xm! And drained accounts ;)

Yes the drain on my accounts has been ongoing for some time now. May have to get rid of a few of these to make room for another XM-18

I cleared out my zt for hinderer. Crk's aren't going anywhere though :)

But now my focus is balisongs, so the high end folders have halted, buy for who knows how long!

I'm trying to convince myself to not like the skinner grind, but it's not working. :p

That black Para 2 is actually an M390 blade, so I'm thinking the two PM2s and the 551 should get me close to another XM. At least close enough :)
