Hey guys,

Recently having gotten into high end knives, I'm expanding my collecting and the Hinderer XM-18 3.5 flipper is next on my list. I've looked online but cannot find a lot of places that sell these knives, or maybe I just haven't looked hard enough. Does Rick H. sell these directly? If so, how long will something like this take on average? Also, I had a couple questions about the xm-18 specifically. I had heard that there are a couple different versions of this knife, one being the base model and a more expensive custom one if this is even correct. If so, what would be the base price on a hinderer xm-18 3.5 flipper new? What are the different options if any? Also, I was curious about the lock bar face on this knife. What does Rick use to treat the lock bar face? Thanks in advance for the responses guys!

First I would visit the Hinderer website to check out the different models. Rick does not sell directly to individuals unless you are active LEO or fireman, etc, but it will give you an idea of the models. Dealers sell out very quickly. You may get lucky and find one on a dealer's site. Otherwise, they sell frequently on the forum exchange, at normal secondary market prices. I'll defer to experts on lock bar face treatment, etc.
But I doubt that you could wear it out in 40 years of opening.

Please read all the stickies here, then ask anything you still have questions about...it takes a few minutes, but covers a lot of what you posted.

So I saw on one of the stickies that the production model of the xm-18 3.5 goes for $385 something but every one I've seen online is like $800...

He sells directly to LEO and Firemen at the retail price. Others pay what dealers or forum members charge, which is higher. Please don't make an issue over this; if you don't qualify as a law enforcement officer, etc., you will either pay the secondary prices or not buy the knife.

This is a superb knife, one of the very best I have ever owned, but it is not for everyone. N2K's suggestion that you read the FAQs should be taken seriously.

If you are eligible to buy direct from Hinderer, the price is $385 + shipping. If not, your only option is the secondary market where prices are set by supply and demand. Demand outpaces supply so the prices are higher.

Interesting. I was just curious why I was seeing a double in price. I'll continue to do my research, read the stickies, and continue from there. Also, I'm here because I want a hinderer, nothing else. I'm simply someone new to this brand seeking the advice of people who have purchased these knives. Also, I see what you mean about the stickies, already through the first two and I see what you mean. I should have started there first!!!. Thanks again man. Live long and prosper.....

It's all good. Welcome, Lots of good info and Great people Here.

Thanks man, yeah I've been on this forum about a month now and everyone (for the most part) is very friendly and informative. Locutus D'Borg has been really helpful as well. I look forward to making some new knife buddies. I'm sick of showing my friends my awesome knives only to see them not be able to appreciate the quality and detail that a lot of manufactures put into their products. I can't wait to get my hinderer though. I think I've pretty much decided on the xm 18 3.5 flipper. I LOVE the thick blade and unique blade shape. Some very cool things about hinderer knives.

There is a 3.5 for sale right now in the exchange (individual sales - production knives) if you hurry. If you aren't ready to buy, they come up for sale virtually every day. Best of luck.

Great to have you here shakeandbake....
Be prepared...once you acquire your first XM...you'll quickly be afflicted with PGD! Permanent grin disorder...there is no known cure for this other than acquiring different scales, steel flame pimpage and other authorized options for your XM to suit your taste. Posting plenty of pics here will help but to date there is no cure...only satisfaction of knowing you have a truly great knife! Good luck in your pursuit! If I can be of help...feel free to hit me up...:D

Welcome from N2K as well!

I was not trying to be a D-word, was trying to help. Often, even if it seems like I'm always around, I only have a few minutes to post. Sometimes even less. Like right now for example.

Good luck in your hunt. And ownership of a Hinderer is not a prerequisite to contribute here.

As others have pointed out, the stick threads have a lot of information, I am a bit partial to the "Generation" thread but I am biased.

(evil grin)

Mike already covered the lockface so I have nothing to add but adding one post to my counter. Oh yeah, buy an XM because you like solid, well-built tactical knives. It is a waste of time/effort to try to impress anyone with one aside from the far end of the knife aficionado. Even average knife guys will think a Buck or Victorinox is as good as it gets. Good luck, the 3.5" flipper is a great choice.

Hey guys I'm new to this forum (posting anyway, lurked for a while) as well. Great info in this thread for someone wanting to take that next step. I do have a question if someone could help me out. Other than the exchange here what are some good places online to deal with when purchasing? Ars there some places that may get them more often than others? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to pm with some reputable folk to take my money.

If you visit RHK website they have authorized dealers listed...that's your best bet.

Thanks. I really can't say how many times I have been on there and looked at all the sites. Way to many to count. Just wondering if there were any preferences and why.

I think Howes had some just yesterday. And at a good price. Just keep googling.
