Hey y'all, I've been deer hunting for the past probably ten years now and have never hunted hogs. However, this past year there have been a lot of hogs getting under our deer feeder and tearing up the ground and making all sorts of holes and stuff. My dad and I are gonna give it a shot and I was wondering who all on here hog hunts and how exactly do you go about doing it? No I don't have any hunting dogs either. I am planning on using my trusty marlin 30-30 and carrying a 22 mag revolver and a kabar if things get a little nasty. What is y'all's take on this and are there any tips or reccomendations for hog hunting?

30-30 will work fine, but try to make head shots so you don't piss them off. Some hogs have a "shield" of scar tissue covering the vitals, built up from constant fighting. This shield CAN resist rifle rounds, so either use a highly penetrative bullet and precise shot placement, or aim for the base of the ear and make brain shots. I have always made head shots on my hogs and even with a "puny" .243, it's lights out for good. Also, a bigger revolver is required.... something equal to or above a .357 Magnum in case of a charge by a wounded boar. Best of luck!

I have used a .30-30 Marlin on hogs for many years. Never had one get away. I load a 170 grain Speer SP over IMR 4320 powder.

They are the same as hunting deer. I prefer a more solid bullet to obtain a complete pass through such as nosler partition or Barnes xxx. If not you may have a hard time trailing them after a shot. I have used everything from a 22 mag behind the ear to my 338 win mag. Same as other animals that size. Shot plavement is more important than the caliber.

Yeah, 30-30 will be fine. I use .30-'06 because is what I like. I don't use dogs either. They have poor eyesight and exceptional sense of smell, stay down wind. Maybe keep th deer feeder going until you eliminate several. Yes, a bigger sidearm is recommended, 22mag might not be enough for a pissed off boar, and you don't want to give them a chance to settle the score. For eating I prefer taking th smaller ones about 150# on the hoof.

.30-30 will work just fine, if you head shoot a hog, aim for the spot in-between the corner of his eye and the bottom of his ear.
If you want to take a broadside lung shot, keep in mind the hog's lungs are located a bit different than a deer; aim lower and behind the front leg elbow for a heart shot.
Google: TexasBoars.com for a lot of good information on hog hunting.
Happy hunting and good eating!

I'll bet he took up the whole back seat! :D I hate wild hogs, and hope that you guys kill every single one that you find, whether you eat it or not.

The hogs are most active at night so you might want to consider putting up a photocell activated feeder light and/or a scope mounted laser designator for night hunting. The hogs are destructive PITA to be certain but I kinda like the little ones smoked low and slow with some dry rub.
