Hello all. First off My name is Nathan, Nate for short.
I just got done with my first knife ever (and as the saying goes, you first knife is going to suck lol). For now I am going with the stock removal method, but feel I will start trying to actually forge stuff at a later time.
I have had a lot of people tell me "oh you have been watching that show Forged in Fire". Well I actually didn't even see that show until after I had gotten started on my first knife. Truth is I have always loved knives and such. I am the type of person who walks into a shop that has guns and knives and I will spend most of my time looking at the knives.
A little bit about my first piece. Well it was made using all discarded material for one. The steel was given to me by someone who said it wouldn't harden up enough for their liking (not really sure on the particular steel) but it did harden up some and holds a decent edge at best. Its thick, like .25" thick, so its heavy, but well balanced. It's 9" in length total with the blade itself being 4.75". It is a full tang. The scales were made with wood from an old fruit crate I found somewhere and the pins are an old rod from a gun cleaning kit, but I kind of like the hollow pin look. The only tools I had to work with were my bench grinder, angle grinder, a couple of files, and a scroll saw for my scales. I used an old grill and charcoal to heat the blade for the heat treatment.
I sure didn't go with anything small and simple on my first go around.
I plan on this weekend going to purchase a belt grinder, probably a cheaper on for now (any suggestions here?).
