NEW TO KNIFE MAKING FROMCOLD BUT SUNNY UK

Welcome to Shop Talk.

The best way to get started is to buy a cheap knife in the style you want and take it apart. Look at how the parts fit together and use them as patterns for making your "better" knife. While fancy scales and doo-dads make it look good, the main thing in making a quality knife is using the right steel and getting a good HT. For a pruning knife a simple carbon steel kile 1084/1095/W2/O-1 will be fine. These can be HTed in a simple forge.

AEBL is also a good stainless cutlery steel, and very low priced. Other choices in stainless are, CPM-154 or CPM-S35VN. Stainless wll need professional equipment for HT.

If the HT for either steel type is out of your skill set, have a nearby maker or a professional shop do it for you.

Fill out your profile with some info about yourself. We always want to hear about out new brethren.

Bristol Bear,
Have you found Edge Matters yet? UK based knife forum? The knowledge here might be a bit broader, but the UK sites are good when you are trying to figure out tools, sources for supplies and maybe even find local makers who you can visit.

The folding knife video that I have, and rate highly, is by Chris Crawford, but it is a DVD and his stuff isn't on Youtube unless someone has pirated it.

Does your knife need to fold, or can it be a fixed blade knife with a sheath? This would make your job a lot easier. It would mean the knife is less easy to carry around in the UK, legally, but it would be guaranteed not to fold up during use, and if the person is only using it in their garden, there isn't much need to carry it around anyway.
Best of luck

Chris
