Hello,
I 'm new to knife making have made a few knives from old saw blades and such with ok results but am wanting to move up to "known" steel. I have a piece of 01 steel that I will get 2 knives out of. My question is how can I anneal it before I start working on it? Also how do I post pics? Can't seem to figure it out. Thank you.

The 01 should have come in the anealed state. Where did you buy it ?

What he said is correct. Most O-1 is sold as PGA (precision ground annealed) with a spheroidize anneal done on it so it tools, machines, and sands easily. You should be able to (using a good sharp file) round a corner of the bar without too much effort, if that is teh case it is already annealed

Didn't buy it. My cousin had it. It is labeled "01 tool steel oil hardening" it seems fairly soft when running a file over it

Should be fine. If you can file away at it, you can probably drill it, and thus make a knife from it without any steps before that. Welcome to the club

I trust you will be sending the 01 blade out for heat treat? You cannot do it well enough with a backyard HT.
